Need help picking.

I'm going to submit to THIS juried show, Camera--USA.
I can only enter one.

I'm going to make either a VanDyke or palladium print of one of these two images:

Carlsbad

St. Simons

Of the two, may I ask which y'all prefer?

Thanks,

--Allen

Carlsbad! Awesome shot Allen. The surfers make it for me.

Thanks.
I should have made a poll. Come to think of it, I've never made a poll before.

Surfers. The composition and action grabs better.

When making a VanDyke image, do you have to be sporting a soulpatch?

#1 definitely.

Yes, but the rules are looser now. One also used to have to wear a beret while listening to an upright bass too.

I like the second one better, my eyes stayed in the picture longer. The first one seemed a bit generic to me and the shadow was distracting, I couldn't decide whether it or the surfers was the "focus." In the second picture, the focus is immediately obvious but the curve of it drew my eyes back into the left of the scene where there was more there waiting for my eyes to play with.

#1. I like that you can focus on the surfers and then later drift to the houses and rocks with nice detail in them, then out to sea. In #2, the brush/weeds sort of conceal the other houses and the parasail thingie seems out of place since the people are so small.

The kite in the bottom photo almost looks like a sickle moon. I think I like the top one better, though (and that's Moonlight Beach in Encinitas ).

I like the second one a bit better. Looks 'cleaner' than the top one. Like the smooth beach & water, and the simplicity of the kite vs people. Also the sky somehow looks ominous ... probably the darker tones.

I vote for number one, just has a better feel about it. I am wearing a wetsuit and a beret and I have the Dick Van **** show on in the background.

Carlsbad is the shot that has potential but I'm not totally sold on it as is. St Simons won't cut it in a comp. The light is too hard from mid day sun and the composition is unbalanced.

Carlsbad has something to draw people in rather than just dismissing it in 2 seconds flat (this is a photo comp with probably hundreds of entries or more. The judges will experience fatigue and you need to interest them instantly.) Carlbad has potential but I'm not sold on the cropping. The surfers provide a point of interest and balance the composition somewhat but its still unballanced with too much weight on the left. The surfers are off centre but not quite on the classic third either. Play around with the cropping a little.

EDIT: Looking at the composition of Carlsbad I would crop off the left of frame to remove whatever that white object is. Its drawing the eye away but saying nothing. Put the surfers dead centre which works and I would be tempted to darken the corners. In a photographic competition with experienced photographic judges this sort of shot is ho hum. It can work but you NEED to nail this type of shot to be in the running. If your not sure what it means to "nail" a shot like this then maybe its not the right shot. Something quirky or bold is more likely to work for you in a competition.

Anthony

VanDyke and palladium are different formulas for sensitizing papers.
Basically, VanDykes are chocolate brown, palladiums are dark gray (silver is black, cyanotypes are blue...).

That has all sorts of alternative processes listed and how to make them.
