Thermocouple

I bought a 1972 Scotty Hilander travel trailer a few weeks ago. Within that trailer is the original Coleman propane heater/furnace. Apparently the previous owner thought the thermocouple was bad and removed it. They failed to replace the thermocouple before I bought it (the trailer). 2 questions....is it correct that the last 1/2 inch or so of the thermocouple should be directly in the pilot? With the thermocouple directly in the pilot, the pilot has stayed lit a few times, but more often than not, still goes out after trying to light it. Could it be something else other than the thermocouple or am I doing something incorrectly? FYI, I hold the flame to the thermocouple at least a minute before switching the control to "on". Thanks.

Old or moisture in the pressure regulator box from setting Idle over the years. It may work if it drys out in the warm weather.Might be a cockroach living in there since Woodstock.

I'm wondering if there are other parts missing. The pilot arrangement etc. doesn't look like anything I've seen (or even close) on the intraweb. From northern Ohio eh?
