I have a question for chipcom.

If you look at a clock and the time is 3:15, what is the angle between the hour and the minute hands?

so what is the angle? Something in the 350 degrees range, I'd reckon, right?

 Tom Stormcrowe 03-23-11 11:55 AM

Depending on the interpretation, either 0 or 360º when you consider it. If you look at it as travel from the origin point with both hands at the same point, it's 0º. If you start at the origin and follow around to the minute hand, it's 360º

 Couch 03-23-11 12:05 PM

Thank you all for the wonderful answers. You all get an A++. However, the question was asked of Chipy and I have not received an answer yet. I have a feeling he doesn't love us anymore folks.

True in general, but at 3:15, the hour hand would theoretically be 1/4 the way from 3 to 4 right, so it wouldn't line up with 15 on the minute hand anymore. More like 3:16 or so, no?

Yeah we're all the nerdy kids in class who have our hands up shouting ooh ooh ooh pick me when the one kid who doesn't know the answer gets called on.

I was asking so I could plan my evening.

 z90 03-23-11 01:48 PM

7.5 degrees.

minute hand is at 90 degrees, hour hand is at 90 + (360/12)*(1/4)

 himespau 03-23-11 02:19 PM

I'd go 352.5 degrees based on the original wording of the question, but thanks for doing the math, I was too lazy.

 jsharr 03-23-11 02:21 PM

Come on guys, let's not ruin this with math.
