Athens or Rome. Help me decide where and what to do...

    All,

I'm in Abu Dhabi for work for another week or two, and myself and two other co-workers are going to stop by in Rome or Athens for about a week on our way back (it was narrowed to these two due to complex work-related logistical issues and cost). What I'm looking for is which you would recommend. Keep in mind we are all in our mid 20s, male, and looking to do touristy stuff during the day - see the sights - and definitely go out at night.

As far as hotels we're looking into the Erdarelli Hotel in Rome. It looks like a pretty good, central location, as well as super cheap. We're essentially looking for a roof over our heads, and little else for amenities.

For Athens there are a few more choices in our price range. First is the Ionis Hotel, which has the same criteria in Athens as Erdarelli does in Rome: nice, central location and dirt cheap. There's also the Aristoteles Hotel around the same area, and the Blue Sky Hotel is a ways south. The list goes on. A main problem here is not knowing WHERE in Athens is the best place to stay with the easiest access to everything. Same with Rome, actually.

Obviously all three of us are almost completely ignorant in both locations, which I think will make it cool. Any recommendations, travel tips, advice, information, etc, etc will be greatly appreciated. We plan on being there approximately 5 days, too. If you're familiar with only one place, perhaps could you list the best things you did there; a don't miss list, so to speak.

I'll try to check this a few times to update and ask more questions, but BF really hates me being in the Emirates, and blocks me 90% of the time, so don't take it personally if I don't respond to you. Thanks again.

    Cheers,
    Brett

You question is not easy to answer because both cities are completely different. The only similarities are the locations (near the water), decent public transportation, walkable, smog, and very historical. If I were in your shoes, I would just flip a coin and see where it lands then go to that city/country.

    +1 on the coin toss.

EDIT: Also, deciding a trip on a coin toss will lead to epic stories. "Hey, let me tell you about how this happened."

Hey, they could coin-toss their way through the whole trip. "Should we take a plane or boat back to the States?" "Coin toss!"

I see a movie in the making with this concept...
