Graphic Designers - Opinion requested

So there's this logo that was in use at work until recently:

In your opinion, if you were to write the letters out, what should they be?

I can see C&MP or maybe MP&C... but man, such an ambiguous logo should be chucked forthwith.

I usually read top to bottom, left to right, so to me the logo reads MC&P.

I think they were going for MC&P also. Not a good logo, however.

I read it as MPC& with proper left to right, top to bottom and head cocked 45 degrees standard of English reading.

I figured the C and P go together since they are the same colors. I read it as M&CP.

You'll never have any balance with those letters written out if the '&' is kept. No matter how you do it... it's just not going to happen.
The original logo is the sort of thing that bugs me too. It looks like someone with too much time on their hands and a copy of microsoft publisher was given free reign to do whatever they wanted. Not that there's anything wrong with publisher, I've produced some nice stuff with it. Generally programs like that have just enough simple features to enable those who really shouldn't be designing.

My advice/opinion:
Lose the '&'.
Lose the reflections/shadows/other ridiculous effects.
Choose a different font. The current font makes the C look sort of weird... like it's trying to attach itself to another letter.
Make sure your blue and yellow compliment each other. That is assuming you plan to keep the blue and yellow.
I actually like the letters contained in boxes notion, but when they're put in a line you'll need to get the spacing right. Don't have them crammed on top of each other; likewise, don't have them too far apart.

I've never designed a logo, but that's got awful. The & sign is ridiculously placed, and why have the reflectiveness? I'd imagine that's difficult to replicate on letterhead on a laser printer, for example.

+1 on both counts.

My eye is drawn to the top letter first, so I would think it's the first one. The "C" & the "P" are in the same style so they seem to go together, so my eyes tell me M&CP. If it were CP&M I would think the "M" and the "&" would be reversed. It's pretty confusing though. And awful. So very, very awful.

I would think the metallic look is dispensed with in the B&W version. But I might be wrong. I have seen worse.

Ya, for real.

I am not a graphic designer, yet this is FOO, so I will state my opinion anyway.

I think it should be CMP&.

Ambiguous and makes no sense.

All advertising is evil, and graphic design is too close to advertising to be blameless.

Just an FYI:

The logo was created by a graphic designer with a degree from NYU. He no longer works for the company. The logo was used for 6-7 years, and was discontinued within 6 months after he was let go.

Well, actually, they dismantled the department because there was only one person left in it, so they assigned her to the Advertising department and replaced all of the duties that she and the other designer did with PowerPoint templates. I find it hilarious that two people's duties were replaced with PowerPoint templates.

A lot of people could be replaced with PowerPoint. Entire project management consulting firms and government agencies could be replaced with PowerPoint and Visio.
