Never grew cotton, but you better have a huge chunk of land if you want to grow it and be willing to put forth every moment of free time you have towards tending to the cotton plants.

You have to do all that? Can't I get some Monsanto's genetically modified cotton plants that could grow worry free?

You could, but you still need a lot of land to get a good harvest in order to make something out of it.

Just stick to vegetables for now or try and grow green beans, I'm trying to figure out what the heck I'm going to do with 17 greenbean plants. I didn't think 17 of the 18 I planted were going to grow.

I don't think growing cotton would be the issue, growing enough cotton and having the means to process it would be the issue.

Fine. Grow them. Get a bag of cotton balls from the drug store, pull about 8 out and then plant them 12 inches apart in holes that are twice its size and two inches deep that have about one inch of potting soil in it. Cover with mulch and water thoroughly. Water again morning and evening for the first five days. Water only in the morning after that. Watch the results happen.

Good luck and have fun.

Sui's idea of planting is a good idea if you are limited in space.
Don't forget to buy cotton-gin but use it sparingly to water your plants.

Nah, those are expensive to maintain, need to be watered daily and when they finally grow you can't sell them. You'll never get any return from your investment.

...Unless they happen to become millionaries and buy you a nice house or something.

He said he wanted to grow it, not make a tee shirt. I think it would be cool. I've never seen a cotton plant. Where would you get the seeds? All they grow here in Illinois is corn and beans.

The cotton plants will look good in your yard. They get quite tall.

You're in south Florida playa.
How many conversations have we had on growing a cash crop?Ten gold chains on your neck, white Panama suit, gordita on each arm, entering the Copa de Cabana to your own private table next to the stage listening to Carman Miranda serenade you.

I live in the heart of cotton country. All of my great uncles were farmers... and they all grew peanuts. Not cotton.

Farming is hard work with little glory. All of their kids got the hell off of the farm as soon as possible.

OK... so you want to grow cotton for entertainment:
  • Check the laws in your state. It is against the law to grow cotton without a state permit in some places.
  • Cotton needs hot temps to germinate.
  • Cotton needs hotter temps to mature. 80-90 degF.
  • Cotton needs loamy/sandy soil that drains well.
  • Don't water the seeds much until they sprout. Then water them regularly until they bloom... When they bloom, stop watering. You want the plants to dry out and lose their foliage.
  • Cotton is subject to attack by so many different pests that it isn't funny. Pesticides are necessary in most cases.

And good luck getting seeds. You can steal some bolls from a farmer's field, but some take that very seriously. A friend of mine stopped to let some out of town relatives pick a few bolls from a field... the farmer drove over and threatened to call the police. It is theft.
