Repairing digital camera lens

I have an old 2003 Canon digital camera(SD100 model) that is partially broken. The gallery/review section works but if I want to take pictures it just displays a black screen. I'm assuming that the lens are broken; well for taking picture anyway since the review/gallery section is still good.

I looked up Canon repair support and it eliminated that it will cost me $109 for it to be fixed. For that much I could just buy a new one.

But before I toss this one away and buy a new camera, I'm wonder if there's a much cheaper way for me to get it fixed. I'd love to be able to fix it myself but I'm not sure where to start or look for instructions.

Trade it in with Canon's loyalty program I've used it twice. You get 20% discount off of Canon's factory refurbished camera's.

Call Tech Support at 866-443-8002 or 800-828-4040 to get started.
You will need the serial number of your current camera.

Cool! That's some good advice I did not know about. Thank you Chris.

May have a bad CCD. Check this advisory http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html

They should repair if for free. Had 2 camera that were affected.

I have a Sony digital video camera on that list that appears to have a ccd problem, It's probably7 or 8 years old, do you think I could still get it repaired for free?

Thanks for the heads up about their loyalty program, chris.

mtblurkr - I believe it is a CCD sensor problem. I gave Canon technical support a call and they are willing to examine it if it is a CCD problem, if so they are repairing it for me free of charge.

Mine were Canon's and they were repaired for free. But according to the link

"Regardless, in the US, the story is the same (at least it is for all the products we checked): "From October 3, 2005 through October 2, 2007, Sony will repair, free of charge, affected products exhibiting the above-mentioned problem where it is caused by the image sensor device. Sony will also cover the cost of shipping and handling to service to correct this issue."
No service forms or mailing addresses are provided on the Sony US site. Rather, owners are instructed to contact the Sony Customer Information Services Center for further assistance at 1-866-703-7669."

Thanks, I'll at least try, I was going to throw it away. I thought it meant that they stopped servicing them on October 2, 2007.

LateNight- How's your situation with Sony repair support?

I just called Canon and mine's currently being fixed, they should be shipping it back within 5-7 days they said.
I actually didn't ship my camera out for repairs until the 5th, which is why it's taking so long. I goofed!!!!

And yes, they're fixing it for free because of the CCD laser problem.

My camera came back today and it's working perfectly again. I'll take a picture of my bike tomorrow when it's lighter outside.

This has to be the best customer service I've ever had from a corporation/company. It took a little longer than I expected but that was totally my fault, I mailed them my camera 5 days later after I called them.
