So who should I yell @ at my university?

Since staying in Blacksburg over the summer, only summer-school students can use their Gym facility because they payed the gym fee. I am not a summer-school student, but I did pay the 59$ summer session 1 fee to use it.

The problem is that their department, Rec Sports, does not update the system until early to mid July, which means ANY student not registered for classes or who did not pay the 59$ fee, has essentially free access.

And this is where I'm furious. I know three other students who are not in classes and boast/laugh about not paying the fee and go to the gym everyday. It's not fair. I am an out of state student paying a boat load to come here, and 59$ is a lot of money. So I am going to write a letter to Rec Sports about the problem, and maybe/hopefully they'll do something about it.

Should this be taken up with Rec Sports? (maybe I could be granted complimentary access for summer session II?)
Or should I threaten to take it up with the Provost Office at Tech? I kind of want my money back or like I said, a waived fee for the next summer session (July-August).

If you try to get involved every time you notice someone getting away with crap, you'll go insane. Let it go. My guess is that they're aware of the problem already and simply hope that few people will take advantage of them.

I think you should stand on principle and take it to the highest court, even if it leaves you destitute.

Or, you can let it go.

Take your frustration and twist it for something more obtainable... like petitioning to make the showers co-ed.

My experiences at Tech taught me one thing. No one in the services departments really wants to help you, but if you're a big enough pain in the ass... you'll get what you want. Most of my fights were with parking services and my gym activities were few and far between... so maybe my advice won't work.

Take it up with the rec services. If nothing else you should be prorated for time lost. Start low and work your way up. In most cases the higher ups just get irritated if you go straight to them.

You shouldn't yell at anyone about it.

Remain calm and set out your points in a logical, sane manner, and you're more likely to get results.

These issues are one of the reasons that the Dean of Students office exists.

They're too busy coming up with goofy crap for incoming students to do at orientation to worry about someone's gym fees.

Maybe, maybe not. State universities have a vested interest in attracting and retaining cash cows, um I mean payers of out of state tuition.

My experience at universitites and other large institutions is that if you can't get the attention of the person or unit that you have a beef with, you have to take it up with the folks that they report to, who are often more willing to give you a fair hearing. Is it worth the time and aggravation involved? Your call...
