It's a Pederson, sometimes called a Dursley, a 19th century design. The originals are indeed rare and valuable, but they've been in production again since the 1970s and aren't terribly rare. The mech is a giveaway; the originals didn't have derailleurs. They're also strangely rideable.

Not as pretty as vintage ones, in my opinion, but:

Thanks. I do like those, but you're right, they don't have that vintage cachet. And at $52 (plus the cost of converting to hubs with solid axles), not gonna happen any time soon.

And actually a quick search of fleabay for "bicycle wingnuts" turns up lots of vintage options, some quite cheap. But again, what I would really want would be something retro-ish, that can screw onto a replacement QR skewer.
