Cat Question........

OK, I have a serious question. Annie has taken to napping in MY laundry basket. No one else's, just mine, or on any of my clothes if I set them out for tomorrow. Why is she doing this?

Yesterday, I loaded my laundry in the washer, closed the lid and turned it on, the lid suddenly popped up, and a wet, POed cat came racing out.

That is curious. I've found that my cat will occasionally start doing seemingly random things on a regular basis, and then after a while she simply stops. To me it makes no obvious sense but I'm sure there's a reason for it. I just chalk it up to cats being utterly insane.

Why does everyone in your household have personalized laundry baskets?

Because my wife has a lot of cold wash/delicate cycle stuff, and we'd rather sort as we go than to sort it at the machine. I have a whites basket and colors basket (20, and so does the wife, except she also has a delicate cycle basket (3).

Trying to figure out cats is harder than trying to figure out women.

My cat likes to sleep on laundry too, although she's never made it into the washing machine.

My old cat would pee on my laundry and only my laundry if I was one day late changing the litter box.

I wear socks at home. I usually leave them on the bed when I go take a shower in the morning. When I come back the cat is napping on them.

Cats are really affected by smells... to them some smells we think are pleasant are nasty (they generally run away from perfume) and some smells we think nasty is heaven. Catnip stinks yet they love it. Just as a cat gets to know their mother by her smell, a cat gets to know their human, mother subsititute (the difference between dogs and cats - dogs see humans as part of a pack, cats see humans as their mother - cats will stay kittens forever if you have a close bond. I have a 17 lb kitten - great!). Your smell is comforting. It's like laying on "momma". It's sweet...

If you want the cat to stay away from the basket, spray some orange oil on it. Cat's hate that smell. Dirty laundry, not so much...

When I was younger we had a big fat tomcat that would try to nurse on your finger and knead just like a kitten. It was really cute. My 15 year old female cat still kneads when she purrs.

To prevent this from happening again, just make sure the laundry basket is out of reach of the cat. Put it in a high place, for example on a wardrobe.

+1 I read that putting some clothes outside your house is a good way of helping your lost cat find their way home - (for indoor cats that have snuck outside and gotten lost - this happened to one of mine a week after moving into our house)

Well, to really address the problem you need to put the washer up there.

I had a cat who liked sleeping in my school backpack. Every morning I had to shake her out of the pack but one day she snuck back in and I didn't realize it until I reached the elevator and my backpack started wriggling around and meowing. Seems she liked sleeping in the pack but not when it was zipped shut and tossed onto my shoulders.

Cats are crazy and wonderful

My cat sleeps in/on my laptop bag if I leave it laying out. I'm known at work for having a hair-covered laptop bag.

Plus the clothes don't move around, so the cats' think they can stay there indefinitely, sleep and dream about their master.

+1000

My little cat likes laundry fresh out of the dryer, but that's probably because she's old and thin and has no insulation of her own. When there's no laundry around, she's a complete lap hog.

Won't work. My parent's cats have been known to get stuff off the top of the fridge.

If I leave my dresser drawers open one of my cats like to sleep on my clean socks.
