Screenshot help

Hi. We are having a discussion on another forum about flight simulation. I feel that we need the opinion of non simmers to resolve it. If you would, please comment on this picture.

Some things you can include in your comments.
  • Does the scenery look real to you or does it look like graphics?
  • What year do you think the game in the picture was released?
  • Would you rate the graphics as poor, average, good, or excellent?

Thank you.

Looks pretty natural. I can see JSharr riding his new Huffy down Elm Street.

Looks real at first sight but kinda odd that the roof on many buildings don't have any spots... like they all got painted recently or something. Lacks a little bit of random "aging" of the structures. But still, not cgi... more like real picture that has been retouched or something. That's my thought.

The first thing I noticed was the streets have no striping or signals.

Not to totally miss the main point, but in a real plane, the pilot looks forward, not down, so he doesn't really get this sort of view in the first place, not until the alien pod tears the roof off the cockpit and he grabs his Nimbus 2000 and his lightsaber and begins fighting it mid-air while Green Lantern saves the passengers with a giant green parachute. And by then he's probably woken up and found his pillow covered with drool.

So anyway yeah, what's the forward view look like? Realistic atmospheric effects and weather, etc? I still remember playing Fly!2k with my ELSA Revelator 3D shutterglasses, it had some exceptional cloud effects.

Oh, and another thing about the screenshot: where are the buildings' shadows? I see the sides facing the viewer are shadowed, so the lack of their shadows on the ground is a clear miss.

As far as the year... I haven't play FS in ages so I'm not sure... but I do recall some time ago that microsoft shutdown the flight sim divission so, unless something new has ben launched, it can't be too recent.

PS: Got curious and checked the wiki... latest version was Flight Simulator X, released in 2006. Unless is an aftermarket map or something, it has to be at least 5 years old.

It doesn't look organically constructed or constructed over time. Everything looks brand new, all the greenery is perfectly green, etc. Not only does it not look "lived in" but it doesn't look like anyone lives there at all.
Like Irvine.

Agree with all of the above, close but no cigar.

other points that are not mentioned.
The distant graphics are too sharp.
There's not enough fog or smog in the distance for a city of this size.
There's no HDR lighting, despite the shadows facing the camera.
Unless the camera was mounted on the outside, there would be some window artifacts.

overall, the image looks like it came from at least 2002 and at most 2004. If it had those graphics at the time, it would have been state of the art.

Looks like typical flight sim graphics to me. Nothing realistic at all.
Looks like FSX, so c.2006
Looks about average to me.

Definitely CG. Not real at all. Furthermore, anyone who even remotely considers it real has not spent enough time outside.

I appreciate all of your comments. The screenshot is from X-plane 10 which has yet to be released. I too was not impressed by the graphics...especially when compared to what is already available on the market.

Microsoft Flight is set to launch and the scenery is much improved.

FSX was the previous release. There are actually some great third party scenery addons available. These addons are expected to be available for Flight as well.

Earth Simualtions is experimenting with photo scenery...this is as real as it gets.

Sure can't wait 'til 10 comes out. I've got the 9 demo installed but don't wanna buy 'til 10 hits.
