So you like Maple Syrup..
 
Now, I know there was just a thread on Canada's new plastic money but, it gets better..

My daughter works in a bank and brought home one of the new 100's today. If you get your hands on one, smell the clear maple leaf... Yep, we have maplefrikensyrup money. Awsome.:thumb:

Real maple syrup is great. I had never tasted it until we visited Vermont a few years ago.

That stuff that they sell in stores as maple-flavored pancake syrup is sickening. And I mean literally sickening- something happened to me when I was a child and made me associate the smell with being really sick, so I cannot eat that syrup today, or even smell it. But real maple syrup doesn't smell like that. It is unfortunate that it is so expensive.

I like pancakes and waffles, I eat them with honey and butter.

I love *real* maple syrup. I went on a school field trip as a kid to a place where they made it (in northern Indiana of all places). They didn't use the "tap & bucket" method to collect the sap. They had blue tubes running from each tree downhill to a covered bathtub. Yes, a bathtub. There was a building next to it where they boiled it down.

We got a sample. it was a toothpick dipped into it. Yep, tiny sample.

We used to make maple syrup when the kids were younger - it's a lot of boiling! 30 gallons of sap for 1 gallon of syrup. Good thing we have free gas!

*real* maple syrup had autoimmunity properties (like those found in mother's milk) - VERY healthy food!

I order maple syrup by the gallon from the maple sugar forest at my undergrad school. About time to order up some more.

My wife's uncle lives near Saratoga and he taps trees, takes the sap to the co-op, and gets gallons of the stuff. Sometimes he sends us a quart or two for Christmas.

I love maple syrup and will not eat the fake stuff any more. Since the flavor is much more intense, I use less than I would of the fake stuff. I keep the bottle in the refrigerator and heat it in the microwave before using it. Yum.

I only heat it for 20 seconds. That's enough time to get the temperature just right. ;)

Ditto. Expensive, but so worth it. I keep mine in the cupboard, though.

It sucks to order pancakes/waffles/french toast at restaurants now, though. Even if they're good otherwise, the HFCS "syrup" they offer ruins it.

I once brought my own maple syrup to Waffle House and the waitress was like "we've got plenty of syrup honey." And I told her that I really didn't think what they had would be classified syrup.

Maple Syrup should be stored in the refrigerator. I found this out after having a close look ours that we used to always store in the cupboard. It had a light mold on the top surface. You won't easily see this unless it's in a glass bottle, or you use a flashlight. Here's the recommendation from the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers Association:

My in-laws got us a bottle of real NE PA maple syrup a few years ago. I finished it early this year and I miss it dearly. Allegedly, the sister-in-law is supposed to be arriving from Scranton with some today. :)

Nice to know that. I would have thought that someone who loves fake chocolate milk wouldn't have such discriminating taste. ;P

I've read up on the subject, and supposedly it's fine at room temperature for short periods. A bottle of maple syrup for me falls well into that category. :)

I love the real syrup, too, but it is so expensive I make a quart last at least a year. And I also like Stephens fake chocolate milk, so there!

First of all, x is a robot -a prototype, actually. And Jsharr has freely admitted the galaxy of his true origin.

For me, the whole sensory thing hits close to home (in a very literal sense). And if you never see a sour-apple jolly rancher again, it was my drunken suggestion at a dinner party that was the catalyst.

Yeah, our had sat in the cupboard for a while. Still won't take a chance with it again though. It was gross!!!
