Malfunctioning bathroom vent fan

So the Broan bathroom fan, that I replaced about three months ago, has suddenly stopped working. The fan motor hums and gets warm, but the squirrel cage fan does not rotate. I can rotate the motor shaft by hand, and the fan spins freely, but the motor drive is not rotating the fan. Any ideas on the problem and how to fix it? Unfortunately, I had already discarded the packaging and receipt from Lowe's, so I cannot return the unit.

check the wiring- maybe bad ground or loose connection
is the wiring connected the right way? (sometimes accidentally wiring + and - ) does nothing but spin the fan opposite way, but may toast your motor.

your motor could be toast bu hopefully not
good luck

I'll bet Lowe's will take it back.

It broke already? How much time have you spent in that bathroom in the last 3 months?

Take it to Home Depot. They'll take anything back.

A Home Depot employee told me this so I am publishing hearsay:

January 12, 2011 a customer brought in a Christmas tree and got their money back.

Oh, but what you really want to do is contact the manufacture's customer service.

Do you know if the shaft is spinning apart from the fan blades? Is there a defective spline that got stripped or something?

I'll vouch for that. I took a lawnmower back to them after six months of severe use and they refunded me full price. I didn't even have to ask, I just wanted it serviced.

No it is not. I can rotate the shaft freely by hand, but the motor is not turning. I did some Googling, and this seems to happen on occasion, and it indicates that the motor windings are defective. It cannot be repaired, only the motor replaced. I think the motor should have lasted longer than three months, so I sent an email to Broan reporting this. I will report back as to their response. Broan does sell a replacement motor kit, but it does not fit the Broan upgrade kit that I installed.

My bathroom fan has been working for over 30 years. I clean and oil it annually. They just don't make **** the way they used to. Built in fail.

Do you have gas masks for the rest of the family?

I was going to go with a defect of some sort. 3 months is ridiculously short and they should offer to replace the motor or the whole thing.
