How may of us are pilots?

I've been a pilot since 1989,,,, A good friend of mine is ATC. The never ending saga of ATC against us pilots......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzFtunP1ytc

What ATC would say to us if they could.... or DUI's did not get in the way.

Former

Love to fly, but couldn't justify the cost - flying around in circles with no destination just for the hours to keep current. If I am not current, I'm not safe! As a stockbroker, had a general informal discussion about flying with a Delta pilot client. Never will forget the way he supported my decision as he wished others in the sky had similar insight.

Fast forward to today, while they have watered it down, I am very healthy but doubt I would pass the older standard medical flight exam. Also, don't know what is going on as never had the problem flying, but my last 4 commercial flights experienced severe vertigo during decent and maneuvering for final approach. I can't walk a straight line until around the baggage clain area, but still have that weird feeling.

It does have it's advantages. With my flight history, when on a tourist oriented ride in vintage aircraft, the pilot will usually hand over the controls to me...for everything except a barrel roll.

I may have you beat. In the military, I was a mental health officer. That was the one clinic they would stay out of as there was a high probability of be grounded. So even if you cleared the plane to fly...they couldn't.

One case I remember fondly was an Air Traffic Controller referred by his commander. Obviously depressed and going to extreemes on trying to convince me that he could do his job. Not realizing that I was also a private pilot, I let him keep digging it deeper and deeper until I switch over to pilot lingo...and he knew he had been had.

Another is what I call the "malingering pilot" faking a problem to get out and usually has a job lined up with an airline. My favorite was a pilot with a cushy assignment flying the Generals Learjet. He suddenly developed a phobia of IFR (instrument flying). Others would come inbefore they were discharged wanting to know if there was a cram course they could take on passing the MMPI (a standard psychological exam) that the commercial airlines werre requiring applicants to take.

Of course the classic counter to that video is the pilot that records the tower's instructions and simply plays it back to them. Then the tower replies back, "Could you slow down, I couldn't understand it."

Ha, I was just joking, I have never had any problems with any pilots. From what I have heard through the grapevine, a pilots worst enemy is ANY doctor. Seems like doctors can find some stupid reasons to tell anyone that they can't fly.

Not a pilot, though I flew a plane at age 6.

My biggest claim to fame was a bronze medal in the 2nd International Paper Airplane contest in the aerobatics category with a flying wing design I created myself. The plane spent several years on display in the National Air and Space Museum. That isn't too bad.

My father was, I've gone up in family friend's small craft a few times, but never perused a licence myself. Dad's flown just about every sort of civilian craft just about everywhere in the world, and even a few (ex)military. Piper cubs to the Boing 737 to the Mitchel B-25.

I wish.

I've taken two intro flights in 172s (once at 12 in a 172RG, and once in '09 in a regular 172). I'm half-deaf and would have issues with the radio, and now we have a kid and another on the way, so I have abandoned the idea. Until I hit the lottery and my ear miraculously heals, I am content to look up whenever I hear a plane (be it a 150 or an A380!) and listen to liveatc.net once in a while.

Sure it would... just one passenger at a time and at a top speed of 100mph.

This is the one dad should have kept:

(not his exactly, but same model. Beech 18, aka "Twin Beech")

and this is the one he really should have bought when he had the chance:

I also worked with the team that did all the computer graphics for the History Channel
show Dog Fights.

I did the markings on most of the planes.

Would that have been a Korean War paint scheme for the F4U? I thought all the Corsairs were painted in the old dark blue.

... but I guess the tail by the BuNo says AU-1 which answers my question.
