what to do after falling backwards off a ladder

My mom called earlier tonight. I guess my dad fell off the ladder backwards & hit his head while painting someones condo. I wish he'd take my advise on going to the Dr. I'm needing some kind foo words & some 'not to worries'. Should I push hard for him to go to the doc?

A good friend of mine did this a couple of years ago. I made her go to the ER, they sent her home after a thorough check. She was fine. I stand by my decision to send her.

He hit his head. It should get checked. It will probably end up being no big deal, but he should be checked by a professional.

Yes, push hard. He really needs to be examined by a doctor. Don't take no for an answer.

If he has internet, tell him to Google "natasha richardson". Don't want to scare you, but she fell backwards on her head while skiing, felt fine, shooed away the paramedics and died that night.

I'd suggest upgrading to a ladder. Much more stable than a latter. Those are in the past and fade quickly.

Definitely get your Dad checked out. There could be swelling inside his brain that he doesn't know about.

If he's got a nose bleed and a headache, don't waste time before getting him to a doctor, the emergency room is open all night.

Call the local ambulance service to go and pick him up and take him to a hospital toot sweet. The least he has is a headache and the worst is possibly a life threatening injury. Remember it some times easier to ask forgiveness than ask for permission besides this time you have a major advantage, Mom will be on your side,

Remind me to tell you about Jeff King after your dad goes to the hospital.

Yes he should go and get checked out but at the VERY least he should be kept under observation by those close to him and he should NOT be allowed to drive. Concussion is typically LATE onset. You can be ok immediately after a knock but pass out several hours later.

Well, I don't live in the same area as my folks do, so it's up to my mom to take care of him. HOWEVER, my dad is so FRICKIN stubborn, I don't believe he took my suggestion to heart when I was talking to him on the phone. I'll be calling them on my way to work this morning to see if he's ok. :-( Did call my sis though and let her know what's going on.

If "Sis" lives in the same town as the folks you need to sic a tag team of womenfolks on your Dad, Mom and Sis when things like this happen.

Ugh, that is soooo tough to deal w/ a stubborn, medical-necessity-denying parent! My sympathies... Just a little FYI for your mom and sis since he will not go; keep an eye on his moods and especially his eyes/pupils in the coming days. If he starts acting a bit more moody than usual (or simply out of the ordinary emotionally) take it as a warning sign of possible intracranial pressure. If his pupils dilate in an inappropriate setting or are unequal and/or slow to respond to light changes it is another big ICP tell and should initiate a "no option, we're going to the hospital now" decision. Just have them keep a close eye on him for unusual behavior and best of luck....

My answer was going to be "Get up." but I'll have to go with no1mad's reply, get him to the docs ASAP. Not to scare you but I know/knew a person that died in his sleep due to such a fall.

I knew a guy that got into a wreck on his motorcycle in a race. Hit his head and the helmet did its job. Got up and everything seemed fine. Couple days later at the office, he leaned back in his chair in a meeting and was dead.
