What Do Egg Nog, Figgy Pudding,The Gingerbread Man & Sugar Plums Have In Common?

http://news.yahoo.com/who-knew/egg-nog-27652734.html

Do you know where your holiday food selection comes from and what exactly is in it? Or how many actual calories are there? That includes egg nog, figgy pudding, Sugar Plums, and the rest of the Christmas treats or even parts of the traditional meal really bring.

Who cares? If it weren't bad for me, I wouldn't like it so much.

I'm not a big fan of eggnog and don't care for figgy pudding or sugarplums. Candy cane martinis are another story. Everything in moderation.

What an inane, useless video. Really. A minute and a half of my life wasted.

Better yet, a minute and a half of your life might have been wasted as you say it did in the short term. But it is far better than contributing to your own demise by shortening your life expectency in some measure, going through a bypass operation to fix a malfunctioning heart, or adding to potenial dental woes down the line.

If you eat that junk, you croak eventually and a bit quicker. Being expressed in more simple terms.

My nog...

Local range fed eggs, local organic milk and heavy cream, organic cane sugar and vanilla... and some Haitan rum and 101 proof Bourbon.

Come and have a few cups of nog here and you won't give a flying figgy pudding about how many calories it has.

What do they have in common?

You puked them all up the other night?

Calories don't bother me. Since I have discovered the trick to taking off weight, and occasional indulgence isn't so scary. That said, I too find figgy pudding unspeakably gross.

Sounds a lot like the egg nog I made the other week.

I didn't see fruitcake mentioned in that video. Fruitcake has to be the most unappetizing waste of holiday calories.

Alton Brown has the only decent recipe I've tasted, and it was liberally soaked with brandy.

The hard-as-rock versions in the stores made from those unidentifiable green, yellow, and red "fruit" are better used as doorstops.

Does the alcohol negate any salmonella issues from the raw eggs?

The salmonella risk from raw eggs is very small and if one has concerns it would be with young children or immune compromised individuals. The alcohol content in my egg nog is 15% which makes it about twice as strong as a mixed drink and for long term storage a 20% alcohol content is suggested and people will age egg nog for months and even beyond a year.

The alcohol is blended into the nog and is not added to the nog when it is served... it tastes better when it is allowed to age a few weeks with three weeks being a good minimum.

Fruitcake can have a nearly indefinite shelf life when it is make with alcohol as this serves to preserve it and is another food that needs to be properly aged.

My mom made a great fruitcake (besides me) and used an old recipe that made a very dark and almost black cake... it called for molasses and rum in the ingredients and with proper preparation and care a fruitcake can have a nearly indefinite shelf life.

With improper preparation, it can have an equally indefinite shelf life (because nobody will eat it )
