Let's Ring in the New Year!

We could do it like the quaint little town of Tallapoosa, GA with a possum drop.

Starting at 9 PM the celebration continues until 12:30 AM or until everybody falls asleep.

This year's will be "The Largest Possum Drop Ever!"

The tradition began a few years ago, possibily to honor the town's original name, Possum Snout.

"There's a lot of excitement," Tallapoosa Mayor Pete Bridges said.

"We have this huge, beautiful lit cage. He's inside that. He draws down real slowly, until it draws down to 12 o'clock and then it's on the ground."

"Everybody sits around and takes pictures of it. And then we shoot fireworks," Bridges said. "It's beautiful," he added.

Nah...I'm gonna stay at home, watch the peach drop on tv, and sip my moonshine out of a mason jar.

But GA isn't alone.

Sophisticated New York offers:

From WIBQ

The Wabash Valley boasts one of the more unique New Year’s Eve celebrations in the country. Vincennes is celebrating their fourth year of the “Watermelon Drop.” It’s exactly what it sounds like. Organizers will raise an 18 foot man-made watermelon weighing around 500 pounds 100 feet off the ground at the Riverfront Pavilion in Vincennes. When the clock strikes midnight, 12 locally grown watermelons will be dropped onto a “splatform” to ring in the New Year. The festivities start Saturday, December 31st at 9pm(ET) with music, games, karaoke, and food.

Karaoke! What Fun!

A Quick Fact:

In Denmark, residents celebrate New Year's by throwing dishes at their neighbors' doors. While cleaning up piles of broken plates and glasses might not be the way some people want to start the year, the truth is that the bigger the mess, the better: It means the recipient is lucky because he or she has plenty of friends.

Now that's a Good Time!

Another Heart-Stopping New Years Custom:

In Germany and Austria, people gather around their televisions on New Year's Eve to watch "Dinner for One," a 1963 comedy sketch about an Englishwoman celebrating her 90th birthday. Strangely enough, the 18-minute show's plot has nothing to do with New Year's, and it's unclear how the obscure show became a holiday cult classic.

And let's not leave the Gateway To the Upper Eastern Mid-West out!

The small town of Port Clinton, Ohio, has landed in the public eye for its New Year's Eve celebration featuring a 20-foot, 600-pound Walleye fish. The entire town goes gaga for walleye with restaurants serving up special dishes and a local winery creating a Walleye White. Events begin at 6 p.m. with a kids drop in the Family Fun Center, followed by games, music and a huge rock-paper-scissors contest! Even after 10 p.m., musicians are family-friendly, and after "Wylie" the Walleye fish is dropped, fireworks end the party!!!

A Huge Rock-Paper-Scissors Contest! I need to be sedated!

They drop a pine cone in Flagstaff.

I blame New York for this annual "Let's Drop Something" craze.

Any one know the "logic" behind the tradition?
