Every state has their own knife laws. And also what is legal to OWN and what is legal to CARRY might be 2 different things.

I was at a knife show one time and one of the vendors told me that he got complaints from a police officer one time for the automatic knives he had on display. The vendor said something about "even though they aren't illegal...". I didn't know what he meant and I didn't have a chance to question him. There is such a perception about "switchblades" that I have had no desire to own one, and I get by just fine with knives that you can open with a thumb stud.

Need to check your local laws and it might tie in with weather you have a concealed carry license too.

In California, knives under 2" are legal. That's prob. why that's called California Issue.
From what I can tell by searching some sites I know if, all automatic knives are illegal in Illinois. Sorry.

If that blade is under 2 inches it's legal to own in California without it being spring assisted and just push button. Just remember that if it's spring assisted it MAY be considered an auto, especially if it is being sent overseas. By spring assisted, there is no button to push but is opened by pushing up on the blade manually and a spring will help it come out without resistance. Switch blades are knives that blades come straight out from the body of the knife, not the same as flip out knives. Whatever you do, never have a knife sent via USPS or you will never see it again.
