After paying his first wife, second wife, kids from both, and who knows what other little Rubes he may have out there somewhere, Rube will be able to buy exactly one package of Minty Tic-Tacs as Rube is always on the lookout for the next EX- (insert last name here.)

Mine should be in my account tomorrow. From there, it hits our savings account.

Check it online. Mine was scheduled for the 3rd as well but it hit the account by 10pm on the 2nd. There's also a site from the IRS itself that tells you where's your money at:

https://sa2.www4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/...fgetstatus.jsp

That way you know if the holdup is the IRS or your bank.

IRS had mine scheduled for today and it hit my account about 6am. My paychecks also hit about 6am. Must be when my bank processes these things.

No spending for me though, we've got a foot o snow already today.

I fail to understand why people GIVE the federal government all that extra money.... you CAN adjust the amount taken out with a W-4 so that the withheld amount is closer to what you'll actually owe them, you know.

Simple. When living paycheck to paycheck, it's just easier to overpay the taxes and get a refund than run the risk of owing taxes.

There are some situations where you can't adjust the amount withheld for tax purposes. One common example is an employer sponsored plan to buy company shares at discounted prices. Usually they have a clause saying that shares will be liquidated automatically after you stop being an employee. And when that happens, they might have a rule saying that they will withheld a 30% for uncle Sam.

+1

I have a lot of bills due at the beginning of the year: car insurance, house insurance, property taxes. I'd rather overpay and get a refund than have to fork out more money for taxes on top of my regular bills.

It also depends on whether my company pays out bonuses. The bonus paycheck always takes out more taxes than regular paychecks. I suppose I could sit down and figure out withholding for the rest of the year when I receive a bonus, but that's not likely to happen.

And I read somewhere that if you were found "under-withheld" for an amount bigger than $500, you lose the "privilege" of filing electronically *and* you get a fine.

In general, I agree, however, in practice it isn't so easy. I try to adjust my W-4 every year, but I always end up off one way or the other. Then I married and filed taxes with my wife... I keep trying to get her to adjust her W-4, but she hasn't yet.
