I was in the back of the house after dark tonite, cleaning up my bedroom, when I heard my front door open. Since I was not expecting anyone to be here at that time, I went down the hall to see what was up. There, standing in my foyer, was a man I had never seen before.

He seemed disoriented and out of it. I have been thinking about it, and I think perhaps he was high. I said "Who are you?" and he said "I think I have the wrong house." I said "Yes, you do. Get out, please." And he turned and walked out.

I locked the door and got the license number of his car as he drove away. Ugh!

Not pleasant! Even when there's others home its still frightning having a stranger come through the front door. Glad you kept your cool!

Well, I don't have a 12 gauge. And I live in the boonies...no one to hear my screams and all....so I HAD to keep my cool. I am sitting here wondering if I should have called the police.

My daughter, my grandson, and their little foo-foo West Highlander Terrier are all three coming to live with me tomorrow. Of course, Rowdie is only about 18 inches tall, but he has an awfully loud bark.

He looks like one of these.

Guns aren't always the correct tool. Unless you're comfortable with handling them, it's best to leave them alone.
How about one of those Tasers (stun guns)? Electric zapper.
I'd say you handled it well, a strong, commanding voice disarms some people.

Ms Vickie,

I'm pretty sure that here in texas it would be completely legal to
shoot the sumbich fulla holes and then ask him what he is doing in your
house!
Good job on the confrontation etc. Call the police, you never know what
else he may have done (not to be too negative) but if anything funny did
happen they will have license number.
Get a Dog, The westies are nice, but get one with a nice big bark (like a
GSD), train him to be a big teddybear in reality but who barks at the door.

Marty

Things like that don't happen in Australia. We'd welcome them in, crack a tinnie and watch the cricket.

Not.

Move to Australia! You'd be much, much safer here!

A small caliber pistol (22-38) would be more prudent and easier to handle. You'd need training and possibly a permit. Just remember: Gun control is where and who you aim your gun at.

Can we not turn this into another gun thread?

You handled that very well. The guy was probably harmless, but why take chances? Best not to freak out and scream unless he looked like he was threatening you in some way. Once, I scared off a guy in the laundry room who was trying to break into the machines and steal the money. I said "Why don't you get a job? " He dropped the object he was using to pry open the change box and walked away. I was scared but managed not to show it. He was some stupid teenage punk.

Funny how the armchair gunslingers instantly recommened deadly force or the threat of deadly force as the first line of defense.

In reality, the moral of your story is ....

Lock the front door !!

BTW, its not too late to contact police. They can at least check if the owner of the car has a criminal record or not.

I guess in some places, you still feel like you can leave the door unlocked.

I guess it is time to start locking the doors when you are home alone. It sounds like you handled it just right. Did you call the police though? I would do that.

Oh, and I think moving to Australia might not be what you need to do. Maybe buy a house in town instead of living out in the country away from civilization.

Be careful, Vicki.

Reminds me of when one morning, my wife and I were sitting at the kitchen counter as we had just gotten up. Suddenly, our front door opens (we had just gotten the paper) and a guy walks right in and asks which apartment somebody was living in. My wife jumped off her stool, met the man face to face and proceeded to push him right out the door. I sat there with a stunned expression on my face and my wife only said "just a damn drunk I guess".
I decided to put up a "Beware of attack housewife" sign.

My parents lived in Papua NEw Guinea for 2years just before I was born. From that experience they never leaved the door unlocked. They said living in PNG was one of the greatest experiences ever and want to take me there one day, but at the moment it is way too dangerous for white people.

Odd... I would have just asked him what he was doing... and when he said "oh, wrong house, sorry".. I probably would have laughed and thought nothing of it other than to consider him an idiot.

You need to go get the 12 guage. Get an inexpensive Mossberg model 500 with the 18 inch barrel and those pesky strangers will have something to think about next time. The Mossberg can be had for around 199.00 at most gun stores. Load it with some #4 at minimum.
