How to destroy a laptop?

We've seen a gun used.

Are there any other ways?

My brother in law has a large accounting firm, when they get rid of
a lap top or any computer for that matter they take them to the
rail road shop just up the street and they put them in a press used
to change the wheels on the axles of the train cars. They end up
about an 1/8" thick. Then they are shredded and recycled.

The shop doesn't charge for the service, they are clients of
the firm and the employees have a good time smashing the
computers..

One of the accounting firm employees stays and watches
the destruction to be sure they are useless at the end.

How seriously do you want to destroy it?

There protocols you have to use when working on government contracts that does a pretty good job. I worked on a communications project with a San Diego firm many years ago. None of the computers had USB ports or floppy drives and everyone was inspected for removable media on their way in and out.

At the end of the project, all the computers were disassembled and smashed with hammers. The disk-drives has to be disassembled and each platter smashed with a hammer. Then all the pieces were put into this machine that looked like a cross between a microwave and dishwasher. Pushed the button and it phoned home. In a couple hours, a guy showed up from the NSA and opened up the machine and all the computer parts had turned to powder. He swept this powder into a industrial-strength zip-lock bag and went away.

Our hard drives go out for shredding or erasure, depending on whether they're in a machine or not when we give them to the university property management guys. Before that, we had a hammer and we'd go out to the sidewalk to destroy the drives. VERY therapeutic. I've also been known to throw dead drives around a little just to make sure they're broken.

We have some faculty that are VERY efficient at destroying hardware. Some end up with new laptops every other year. The previous Vice Provost himself got a new iPhone every 6 months because he always managed to do SOMETHING to it.

well, you could give a laptop at total immersion bath, smash it with a sledgehammer, drill it through with a post-hole digger.... or, you could take it to the South of France and improperly plug it in to charge without the correct adapter. There's dull destruction, and then there's incidental-to-vacation destruction!

No one has suggested a streamroller or such. For the office laptop on your last day of work what would be wrong with duct taping it to the rail just before the 5:45 leaves the station.? If it wasn't your last day of work the powers to be would likely make it so.
