Google's new Privacy Policy...

...goes into effect 3/1/12. Instead of the old way of maintaining roughly 60 different policies between all of their different products, they will now have one that links them all together.

Am I the only one who isn't getting a warm and fuzzy feeling about this?

I figured they've had all of the data this long, it isn't like they're going to violate my privacy any more than they probably already have, which is more than they probably tell anyone in public.

Yeah, I already have. Followed a link via Facebook to CNET. I've cleared my history and 'paused' them from collecting as well- in theory.

Oddly, I went to the link, and it asked me if I wanted to turn web history on. I said no.

Part of me also figures that Google is totally in bed with the NSA/DHS/FBI/CIA/etc., so they've already given all of the data to the government anyway, and they're such a bunch of IT screw-ups that all of the data has probably already been stolen anyway.

Google is, first and foremost, an advertising company. They're going to use any means they can get away with to poke, pry, mine, record and analyze every aspect of your life, whether you'd like them to or not. "Opt out" just means they're not showing you the data they're collecting.

I was thinking about all the energy I spent on keeping some amount of firewall between me and microsoft, me and my isp, me and my web browser, me and my media player, me and facebook, now google goes out and says they own the whole rest of my life. Thanks guys.

And further more my work ported its exchange server to gmail so some day my work self and my own self will meet, along w/ all the various people they know, in one big happy google family. Won't that be nice.

I wish someone would share this information with retailers so that I might find clothes that fit.

Not too far off the mark. As was pointed out, Google is first and foremost in the advertising business. The more people they get to sign up to use their products, then the more marketable Google itself becomes to potential advertisers.

Personally, I have a suspicion that AdBlock is allowed to run on Chrome in an effort to placate the masses. If they hadn't, I imagine they wouldn't have enjoyed the continued increase in market share of the browser segment, and Chrome was created to showcase their abilities- and data mining processes.

Sometimes you just can't wear a kilt.

Happily, my current job's dress code is vague enough that I feel justified in wearing the occasional bowtie (the employee handbook only says "white shirt and tie"), but it does specify that men must wear pants, so my dreams of showing up in a black kilt were dashed upon the rocks.

It doesn't say you can't wear both the kilt and pants, does it?

No, but I get hot enough wearing a three-piece suit without adding another seven yards of fabric, unfortunately.

As long as you wear something under the kilt, you should be ok...

By the way, THE OMNIGOOGLE can have all the personal info they want as long as they keep giving free food to guests. Mmm.

You can go with the less formal lightweight 5 yard kilt.
