How much time before you delete someone from your phone list

I have names and numbers that I haven't called in years.

Eh deleting them is work. Wait until the names are too similar or it's too hard to find someone you want to find and then clear things out a bit.
Punctuation is important. It's the difference between "I helped my uncle, Jack, off a horse" and "I helped my uncle Jack off a horse"

Family stays forever. I purge anyone else I have not gotten a call from in 2-3 months. I have about 20 contacts in my phone.

I don't delete ever and I never have an issue finding people. The trick is to use Google Contacts and a Contacts/Dialer replacement software like "Go Contacts". On google, you can create categories and assign contacts to one or more of these categories. Then on the phone, you set your contacts software to display only the categories you want to see. I usually display Family, Current Coworkers and Real Friends.

As I'm using a Tracfone now, I didn't have the luxurious option of porting over my address book from the previous phone (a US Cellular networked touchscreen- couldn't afford a new one, nor a new contract). So this one is populated with family, coworkers from the most recent job, and the local bike shops. My old one has former employers, coworkers, and the like.

There are several "friend" categories that are organized by where I met the friend. For example "Friends from yyz corporation" are people who started out on my phone as members of the "xyz corporation", a standard-issue co-workers list. Other friends categories are "Fiance's Friends", "son's friends", "daughter friends". Sometimes the place of origin is a virtual one... like "BF Friends", which holds no phones but some email address.

I'm sure you expected something more juicy like "Ex-wife Friends". But I don't keep those. I guess those are the only kind of contacts I *do delete*.

Fake friends, facebook friends. You covered BF

The last time I cleaned out my phone was when I lost the old one. Now it's synced with google...

I will delete any number that is not of use to me and periodically scan my numbers for any that I don't call.

All because a couple of years ago, a friend passed away. I almost relieved my bladder when I get a call from his number!! It was his sister who was advising people on his list to not expect any more calls. I know his sister well and we laughed. John had me listed as Pee-Wee (small running joke) on his phone and she didn't know who Pee-Wee was.

Ever since that, I have a pet peeve about just keeping numbers that are being used.

I don't worry about it. It's not like it costs anything to have a number I've not called in ten years. And you never know...
