Did you ever notice that on eBay and Craigslist....

all old bikes are "RARE!"
all tri bikes are "ridden twice"
all hybrids are "road racers"
and all road bikes are worth original MSRP

talk about reality distortion fields.
In the past few months, while shopping for an old steel frame, i must have seen a hundred SUPER RARE COLNAGO MASTER frames

and the uglier the paint job, the more exclamation points follow RARE!!!!!

Who the hell would ride a tri bike once, let alone twice?

I have a friend who is looking for a used mountain bike- can only spend about $700. We have been checking CL. I am amazed at the 1990's old school bikes people are trying to sell for $1000 or more! What? My friend unfortunately knows nothing about bikes and will send me a listing as ask "What about this one?" I have to explain, "1998 bike, old school fork 2" of travel. Coil shock, can't replace. Probably has never been maintained and will need a complete overhaul, etc etc etc." Then I always add "they are asking $1200... offer $200 and see what happens".

Now maybe I just don't know... in our area people are selling really old Kleins (with "rare" paint jobs) - like 1995 - 1999 vintage and listing them for around $1500. Am I msising something? Are these collector items and if so, who is collecting them?

Also I like the "bike, never ridden - $100 or best offer". I look and its like a 2011 Carbon Madone with Dura Ace... tell me that bike ain't stolen?!

Unless I'm selling it, then it's worth 50 cents, apparently.

as a seller it appears that there's now way to avoid getting screwed.
Sell on ebay, get a decent price, get destroyed by paypal, ebay, shipping fees.
Sell on craigs, get lowballed into oblivion.

I just sold a 2011 Quarq power meter, that i paid $1800 for, for $1000.
Couldn't get a better offer, and the thing weighs enough that shipping it would have been horrible.

Fast. All C-list bikes are fast.

I check out MSRP claims. Most are inflated. Sellers hoping for a sucker. I haven't seen a bike worth buying & refurbishing on Orange County CA Craigslist for months. Nowadays, the deals are on new bikes. Asking price for used junk is now what the fair price for good rideable condition bike should be. Old trashed MTBs are listed as excellent condition road bikes. Bikes may not have much use, but they've spent the last 20 years under the eaves in the backyard.

Since I have been checking the OC CA CL daily for my friend, I can say I found one nicely priced road bike... that said no one I know needs one so oh well.

I get the price is inflated because people expect negotiation but why can't people just list what they want and not negotiate. I don't get that. My friend has been turned off by the asking price. I keep trying to explain offer 1/2 or 1/3 and see what happens...

In general, Craig's List sucks. Even the apartment listings are awful. I've seen stuff like, "Close to downtown!" and it be about 20 miles from downtown.

Yes, and "quaint, adorable cabin" = "pile of random discarded building material that happens to have a space in the middle big enough for a bed"
