argh.. anyone NOT have gmail?

Good lord.. gmail keeps giving me invites like crazy... needless to say, I have 6 more invites. So yeah, anyone who wants/needs one, post here and I'll get you one ASAP. :)

danr 12-23-04 07:43 PM

Same here. They just gave me 10 invites. Sorry cryogenic, but I'm piggybacking off your thread.

Invites require a name and email address (if you don't know that already).

monogodo 12-23-04 08:01 PM

I've got over 20 invites still available.

iridebikes 12-23-04 08:04 PM

I have 12. Don't have any more friends. :(

teadoggg 12-23-04 09:49 PM

can i have one? teadoggg@yahoo.com i'm tristan

cryogenic 12-24-04 03:26 AM

dunno if you've gotten one yet, but I went ahead and sent you an invite

HereNT 12-24-04 04:12 AM

Dang it, I've got 6, too. Someone PLEASE send me a PM! (posting name and email in the thread is a sure-fire way to get spam - there are bots crawling the net looking for addresses).

cryogenic 12-24-04 05:31 AM

yeah.... everyone's got tons of invites and no one to give them to... this is ridiculous! :p

catatonic 12-24-04 05:53 AM

None of my friends want GMail....I think part of it being all but one of my geek friends own their own personal mail servers...go figure.

XzEn54321 12-24-04 06:01 AM

I can take a few, no prob...

Nick Gapen 12-24-04 06:25 AM

I think the other reason people don't want gmail is that google scans your gmail for keywords, then sells your email address to advertisers that market in those areas. So if you send a lot of emails about bicycling, you will start receiving bicycle spam.

Guest 12-24-04 10:31 AM

But they are very good at keeping the spam in the spam email box. You never see it.

I've got 10 invites myself. Send me A PM. If you respond on this thread, I most likely will not invite, since so many people who have gmail will send you an invite that it will go wasted.

Thats me. Besides my 250meg hotmail account works fine. My yahoo account is great for signing up for spam and I have like 5 others corporate. I really don't need another haha

catatonic 12-24-04 01:49 PM

Heh, I'm tempted to start my own, but if I do I'm going to do the true geek thing, and use a microdrive, a single-board pc, and aim to make it the size of an ipod. Reason is, those ultra compact single board units can use wall-wart power supplies, and use very little power at all...so it wouldnt make my power bill significantly higher.

anthonaut 12-24-04 07:56 PM

So what if you have heaps of invites? It doesn't mean you HAVE to use them.

Fugazi Dave 12-24-04 09:18 PM

Got a handful of invites myself, but didn't use any of 'em. I pay for hosting and so I've got my own mail server already. A gmail account would be redundant.

cryogenic 12-25-04 01:29 AM

gmail doesn't send your email address to anyone.. they do scan your email for keywords and then display advertisements based on the text found in your emails. However, your email address remains private. I have yet to get a single piece of unsolicited spam email in my gmail account.

Fugazi Dave 12-25-04 01:45 AM

Heh....maybe a gmail account wouldn't be redundant after all. I am a pretty crappy admin.

Check the Spam folder in your account. Gmail is very good at screening the spam out of your main inbox and putting it in the Spam folder. I've never found a legitiate email in the Spam folder, and have never found a spam email in the main folder.

cryogenic 12-25-04 02:14 AM

That's my exact point.. my spam folder has never seen an email since I've had my account. If you read their terms of service, they don't use or sell your email, however they do scan your email text and subject lines for keywords and display ads based on those keywords. They don't give your email away so you can be freely spammed, though.

Toxanadu 12-30-04 02:21 PM

can i have one? i want o see what the hype is about. Toxanadu@comcast.net

thanks a ton guys!

lala 12-30-04 02:43 PM

I heart gmail!

Whats so good about gmail anymore? hotmail already updated their free email sorage capacity by like 100 times and that was the main feature thay made gmail so great wasnt it, the fact that you could store all of your emails. hotmail also increased the maximum attachment size you can
send so im sticking with hotmail.

If you want I can forward my hotmail spam to you. Their filters don't work for me.

MsMittens 12-30-04 03:45 PM

I don't have it. And, honestly, I don't want it. I cannot fathom why (or how?!) anyone could justify 2GB of mail (my ISP recently switched my mailbox to this size but I'm lucky if I'm at 1MB). Additionally, while Gmail doesn't sell your addy I don't feel comfortable about the "snooping" into my mail and the attachments (yes, it does scan the attachments) just so the server can show ads that I might like. It's bad enough that I get swamped with ads online (thank gawd for adblock and mozilla) and elsewhere (doesn't anyone feel overbombarded at times with information??!?), I don't need more in my mail.

Anyways, 'tis my rant.
