Google Hangout: will it work with Windows Vista?

So my wife needs to do a job interview via Google Hangout, and the only computer we have with a webcam is a laptop running Windows Vista. I notice the Google Hangout download app page conspicuously says "Requires Windows XP+, Mac OS X 10.5+, or Linux"
...no mention of Vista.

Am I screwed?

NCbiker 03-22-12 10:40 AM

Haven't used it but I would assume XP+ means any Windows software from XP and after.

XP -> Vista -> Win7
Should be fine. Make sure the OS is completely up to date before hand, and look through the optional updates to see if there's a new driver for your camera and video card.

XP+ includes Vista. So yes, it will work.

Awesome, thanks all.

But you might lose the job for using Windows Vista.

I don't know, it's a company that conducts interviews via a video chat room on a social media website...

bigbenaugust 03-22-12 04:25 PM

At least we have the good sense to use Skype for interviews-on-the-cheap. (It's a little easier to deal with than dragging out the Polycom unit our Overseas Studies friends have.)

storckm 03-22-12 04:35 PM

Just use linux.

Well, duh. But I wasn't going to go there in this thread.

"Dammit Jim, I'm a bass player, not a computer geek!"

btw, I downloaded the app on my Vista machine and it worked fine during a test with my nephew. Wife's interview is Monday, fingers crossed.

It's a company that invented said social media website, hint hint.

I've done a couple of skype interviews. Kind of weird at first, but not that bad and cheaper than flying out there (or them flying me out there). Just make sure that your house (the bit in camera view anyway) is clean and normal looking.

Ooh, I had a coworker whose husband got a job in Google's SF offices. Sounded great. Cafeteria had such good food people would just go to eat there on weekends, free childcare one day to work on own projects. Sounded like a great place.

bigbenaugust 03-23-12 11:01 AM

Yeah, it is like utopia over there... I only visit for the food (I have a friend on the Main Campus).

storckm 03-23-12 05:13 PM

Hope the interview went well, and glad you got it working.

But really, linux isn't especially hard. My wife uses it, and she's not very technical.
