Impaled while watching implosion

The old "Amway Arena" in Orlando Florida, former home of the Orlando Magic team, was replaced by the new "Amway Center". The old building was scheduled for demolition and as expected, many gather to witness the building going down.

On their video broadcast, Chanel 9 (play video and look at 2:10) reporters say a man got impaled in the leg by flying debris: Linky

Old Arena (called Waterhouse Centre back then)

I don't mean to be technical, but you can only get an implosion if the outside pressure is greater than the inside.

oddly enough, both implosions and explosions will hurtle projectiles outwards.

Locals say the building was "The Place" for booty shaking for over 20 years. And proof of it is that even while the building was going down, somebody got nailed. That's some legacy!

Implosions can be dangerous. A young girl died in Canberra when they imploded the old Canberra hospital when she was hit with shrapnel. She was about 1 km away across the lake. The Chief Minister of Canberra thought it would be a good idea to promote a public spectacle and set a date for the implosion and then pressured the team to make it ready for the date. The contractor was scapegoated in the end although truth be known the politicians involved should have shouldered more of the blame.

Yes demolitions with explosives can be dangerous.

I call foul. That might have been a poke at best but it wasn't a good quality impalement. I'm pretty sure that Vlad wouldn't approve of this either!

So if a carbon bike frame asplodes, is that something in between an explosion and an implosion?

I'd rather be impaled while watching an implosion than be imploded while watching an impalement!

I've heard that it's supposed to be an instantaneous transmutation, where the carbon turns into gauds.

You are thinking too literally. The building is termed imploded because it falls in on itself, collapsing into a smaller space than it used to occupy. So yes, the pressure via gravity on steel and concrete is greater outside than the pressure of the air inside.

Happy now?

it's surely controlled demolition, which uses shaped explosives.

It's technically not an implosion. What they do is take out key supports in a specific sequence and the building mostly collapses in on itself due to asymmetric stresses on the remaining structure.
