There is a debate going on as to whether you should buy a Quick Pick ticket or choose your own numbers. Supposedly choosing your own numbers has better odds. I don't know how, though.

I would not disappear. I would quit my job and be on here ALL THE TIME!! You'd never get rid of me!

I would stay where I am now. Although my house may resemble Wayne mannor after the remodel.
I wonder how long it will take to dig the cave.

I have a lower than normal chance of winning, since I don't intend to buy a ticket. It is a small difference though.

That's why I will only spend $1. The odds are so long $1 is as good as $100.

Foo who?

Buying only one ticket gives you the best odds, 50-50. You either win or lose.

I'd buy everyone here a new bike, but I'll never disappear, can't get rid of Shifty that easy!

Your new bike

Actually, it is an infinite difference. Odds of winning without a ticket = 0. Go ahead and try to calculate the % increase in your odds if you buy one ticket. I'll wait.

And picking your own numbers = exactly same odds as quick pick. How anyone could think different = statistics fail.

I would buy bikes with frame colors that matched the wine in my new wine cellar.

I don't get it, either. Supposedly the random number generator for the Quick Picks isn't quite as random as using the birthdates of everyone in your family.

It doesn't matter if the numbers you play are chosen at random or not...completley irrelevant. That's assuming that when the drawing is done with the ping pong balls or whatever they use, that those number are randomly selected. If so, any set of six number played, whether selected at random or not, have the same odds of coming up in the drawing as any other six numbers.

The combination 1 2 3 4 5 6 (not necessarily in that order) has the same odds as the combination 1, 6, 23, 45, 17, 11 (again, in any order).

I'd certainly by myself a new bike, probably buy my wife a new bike too.

It's unlikely that I'll win, given I don't live in the same country and didn't enter it.

I'm still a lottery virgin. Haven't bought so much as a scratch-off, in any state. All I need is this ashtray...and this paddle game.

Odds without a ticket:
0.00000000000000000000

Odds with a ticket:
0.00000000569114597006

Small enough difference to be within the margin of error.

Isn't it something like having a greater chance of getting hit by lightning six times before winning?

One is absolute, the other is not. The % delta from zero odds, to some odds (no matter how small) is incalculable. The numerical odds are extremely low, obviously. BUT...someone will win...maybe not tonight, but soon. Would be crazy to see a jackpot over $1B which would probably happen if nobody wins tonight.

Several years ago there was a group of foreign "investors" who, when the jackpots would get high enough, try to buy millions of tickets and cover as many number combinations as possible. I don't know if they ever won enough to have a real payout -- I suspect they went bust.

It will be free beer at my house and than I'll just disappear for a short time because everyone will want to be my new friend.
Than when all is clear I'll be back.

They said on the news that if you wanted to buy a ticket for every number combination possible...you would have to buy 50 tickets a week for 68,000 years....better get to buying.

Well my chances of winning all that money is zero as I don't have a ticket on that draw but I do have one or two on our lottery for tonight and tomorrow. If I win, unlike most of you, I get ALL the money and the taxman gets squat. Lottery winnings in Canada are tax free.
