Them!

It seems my office partner left a box of sugar cookies on my desk over the weekend, now I'm infested with little black ants. Anyone know of a sure way to get rid of them?

Any office cleaner should work. Windex, 409 etc. Throw the cookies away first. Oh, wait, did you eat the ant encrusted sugar cookies? If so, no hope for you. The ants will eat you from the inside out.

You might try a little soda with a few drops of dish soap. It works for fruit flies. They're attracted to the sweetness of the soda, the soap does them in.

Douse the whole area in 190 proof alcohol. The sweet smell with draw them in. Toss in a match and let 'em burn, baby, burn.

+1 for the general purpose cleaner. Diluted ammonia or vinegar will work, too, but you'll have a bit of an aftersmell.

I like how your office mate left the cookies on your desk and not his. That would be reason enough to hide some of the cookies in his desk drawers.

This. Not sure how many 80s punks we had on hand that would get the Black Flag reference.

Leave a poisoned box of sugar cookies on your desk next weekend.

There are only two ways to battle ants.

Destroy their scent trail or kill the queen. First, see if you can find where they are coming into the building and do battle out there.

Cinnamon seems to thwart them for a day or two. They don't like its smell. I've tried both full strength ammonia and undiluted vinegar without much luck. Kill all the ants that are beyond your smell barrier so they don't find their way back and re-establish the trail. I usually just squash them.

As far as killing the queen, I've had luck with the old trick of leaving cornmeal near the trail and letting them take it back and overfeed the queen. My backyard was swarming with red ants, and I plopped down a generous pile as near to the nest as I could find. The next day there was a noticeable drop in the ant population and they seemed to be wandering aimlessly. By the end of the week they were gone and never to be seen again.

Sometimes you get lucky. One time my apartment got invaded by some micro ants coming in through hidden cracks in the baseboards of the bathroom. I tried everything I could at the point where the water pipe enters the building outside which is where they were getting in. Then we had a huge rain. Problem solved, though I did have to deal with the girls who were caught in the walls of the apartment during the rain and who lost their smelly trail home.

Oh god, I feel for you. Every summer for the past 3 years, the place i am subletting in has had an ant problem. It's getting warmer now, and every time I see a loan ant I freak the crap out and wipe it away. I'm not much of a "kill bugs" person but I know all too well what this is foreshadowing...
