OT - Things to see in Chicago

I'm spending new years near Chicago on a retreat. My only transportation back into Chicago is the day the retreat ends, but my flight home is the next morning. Rather waste money and time on a hotel and leave without ever actually seeing Chicago, my plan was to find someplace to keep my suitcase (if possible) and spend most of the evening/night seeing what Chicago has to offer.

What's there to do/see on a Sunday evening? I'm over 21, so no restrictions there. What areas should I stay away from?

Also, does anybody who travels frequently know what I might be able to do with my luggage since O'hare apparently has no lockers anymore? Do airlines let you check it early?

What day are you going to be in Chicago? It would be easier to recommend things for you to do if we knew exactly what day you could travel on.

For bags, I have the perfect solution. You could check your bags at the Hostelling International. They charge a dollar a bag for a 24 hour period. Call them first and see if they'll let you do it if you're not staying there. I've seen them take bags before, so they may do it. They're located on East Congress Parkway- between Wabash and State Street.

Don't know if you're into this kind of thing but the Art Institute is one of the world's great museums. If I could only do one thing in Chicago, that would be my choice. But it closes at 5:00 on Sundays. Also there's tons of great live music in Chicago, seemingly nonstop. Maybe someone more in touch with that could give you some recos.
