I bet the documentary was done in the 90's. I am NOT getting sucked into this one...

It has too much focus on hair metal, but by the charts I guess that's where R&R was in the 80's. It did get into grunge and the direction things were going in the 90's at the end. I think the 80's was a great decade for music with new wave and alternative but it wasn't mentioned much. Still a interesting documentary.

Like golf, fun but too time consuming

Yeah, but the title says 'american' R&R documentary... The new wave was primarily of british origin, I think... And 'alternative' didn't really crank up until the 90s

And it's just occurred to me that there was barely a breath about bands like Lynrd Skynrd, Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, 38 Special, etc... They were all over the place in the late 70s.

I teased both my daughter and granddaughter to play any one of these two songs at their weddings, but no takers alas.

How about some semi-heavy metal?

OK, so it's a cover....

Speaking of Billy Idol, his 1st band was called Generation X and he was still a teen when fronting them in the late 70's. Here's the G-X version of Dancing with Myself from '79 -- close enough --

In mentioning Van Halen (with DLR on lead vocals) I wasn't too fond of them at first, but I finally took a liking to them in "1984"

I have kind of a love/hate thing with Van Halen. I thought they were their best in the early years. But DLR was cracked.

I always thought Sammy Hagar was an unmitigated ***hole. After he joined VH, I amended it to 'mitigated' ***hole. They actually had some pretty fun stuff all through the years.

I knew Sammy Hagar as the voice of Montrose, but the focus of that band was more guitar than vocals. Rockin' Ronnie Montrose seemed to open up for almost every band I saw in concert during those high school days where we judged all bands by the quality of lead guitar. Here's Sammy & Ronnie on one of their good guitar songs :

Tom Tom Club were the rhythm section of Talking Heads. They had a hit with this in '81

Over this song is the 2:20 intro - still a great tune as usual from the Cure
Friday I'm in Love would be too easy

Sky, Toccata. In the 70's music thread I posted another Sky track from 1979 but Toccata, from 1980 is the track they are best know for.

The 80's wasn't the best decade for Santana yet Carlos released a great solo album titled Blues for Salvador in 1987. From this album came the song Bella. Outstanding.

Though he is know for more of a hard punching genre type song, this song is my favorite of his due to it's more subdued, though dark, nature.

Another Santana track from 1985. Touchdown Raiders. American football means nothing to me but this is a GREAT rocking track.

Here's one of Todd Rundgren's more popular hits from the '80's:

Props to Volkswagen for using another cool song in a commercial. This Love & Rockets tune was never a hit, and is so much in the background you wouldn't notice it if you didn't know the song. From '86
