Merry

I had to put my blue heeler Merry down yesterday.

Such an incredible dog, she'd become friends with everyone in the neighborhood and they all loved her. Heck, people in other states knew her and called to offer their condolences. She lived thirteen very full years roaming the acreage and getting treats around the neighborhood circuit she created. She saved my neighbors from a bear on their roof, ate a pound and a half of chocolate in a valentine's heart box (leaving all the papers), ate half a birthday cake left on the kitchen table, chased off countless deer and was gentle as a lamb with everyone she met.

Merry finally succumbed to lymphatic cancer. Her constantly active body reduced to a burden she couldn't even lift. We buried her in her favorite watchdog spot overlooking the driveway. We'll miss you girl.

Man, sorry to hear about your family's loss. Merry sounds like she was a wonderful dog, a dog's dog, a blue heeler sans pareil.

I is always hard to put down a beloved family companion. In the end, however, it is the humane thing to do.

Peace to you and yours.

Awe....what a beautiful creature.
Cherish the memories. Know she had a better life with you than she would have otherwise. I know the pain sucks, big time....but in the long run, those memories will bring a smile to your face.

Thank you eja.

She was a tough old girl, one of those constants in your life.

My sincere condolences.

Seems a shame that dogs don't live longer. They are a real blessing.

Very sorry to hear this news, it's never easy.
Dogs live shorter lives than people, so people can know more of them.
You'll meet in the next life.

Condolences, definitely. A good dog or a good cat ((Yes, there are good cats!) passing feels like it leaves a hole. Find a new dog. He or she won't be a replacement for Merry, but they'll be the start of a whole new adventure.

Sorry for the loss. I've had to put down a lot cats & dogs. One never gets used to it, particularly when the dog is one those special pets. Lost my greyhound Ginger (raced as Stylin' Ginger) 5 years ago. Still miss her. Everyone described her as difficult, headstrong or just plain *****, but she was the sweetest & most devoted dog I've ever had. 65 pounds of bone & muscle, and the cuddleiest lapdog ever.

Good! Yeah, that's a fear I have, that I'll eventually have to put Annie down because of health issues (Not even a potential right now, happily). Up til Annie, I've always cordially detested cats, but she just grabbed a string. We didn't choose Annie, either, she chose us. She was abandoned and sick when she came into our care, and is likely the most expensive free cat in the history of free cats. She literally just moved in to our apartment one day and never left. She's adopted me as "her" person, and is fiercely protective of me, and I ain't kidding. Shell sit between me and a stranger and just stare at them, daring them to make a move. If my wife yells at me, Annie will take a swipe at her, too.

This sounds exactly like Cat. She adopted Matt when he was alone out in CO and they took care of each other. She was loved by us all and it was a very tearful goodbye when she left us this winter.

I am saddened to hear of your loss. Dogs form a pack with us in it that will last forever.
Shortly after my Minnie had to be put down, my brother gave me a little MinPin pup (who is now known as Blinky the Infamous MinPin), he warned me that it would be a commitment of at least 15 years. I told him, that is not nearly enough.
