i went to a friend's bbq recently where her friend, a middle-eastern muslim guy was doing most of the cooking. it was chicken and veggies mostly, and rather delicious. people were drinking and smoking herb. he was not, and i felt sorry in a way that he couldn't join us due to his vows. but later on, after he made us the best hot tea i've ever drank, he joined a couple people huffing a few reddi-wips. it was kind of hard to believe, but i guess he quickly justified it in some way. of course, he didn't do it correctly nor felt anything. and i could tell he felt some slight shame. i'm sure it's a struggle...

i talked to him most of the evening before he left. we had very little in common, but it was interesting hearing him speak of his family and religion.

i read long ago that the word islam means 'to submit.' i hope it does mean that, for it makes a lot of sense to me if that's indeed the case. i guess i like to think of all the desert religions being a submission of the self...

[and now to click 'submit.']

I saw a movie called "Afghan Star" about contestants in the Afghani version of American Idol. At one point they follow one contestant as she visits a zoo. They show her looking at what the movie claims is the only pig in Afghanistan, there in the zoo.

You might be surprised. There are a number of restaurants in Little Rock that observe halal standards and at least one butcher.
