Looks like the iPad has some barbarians at the gate...

Okay, so while Apple has been busy getting the Court to remove the Samsung Galaxy 10" tablet from the market, Windows held a little press conference to reveal their upcoming Surface tablet. While the Surface does score some points in the bling factor and got the digital device talking heads whispering that maybe this will be the one that saves Microsoft, it's got two glaring issues: 1) the lack of apps currently available or in development for Windows 8 and it's not projected to ship for a few months, and 2)Google.

Google revealed today the Google Nexus 7 tablet. Tegra 3 chipset, quad core CPU and a 12 core GPU. Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity. Android 4.1 Jellybean. And this is the first time that Chrome is the factory installed, default browser. Availability? Pre-order for $199 now on Google Play for shipments starting mid-July.

Google it for yourselves. I saw an edited video on CNET, but I know that source isn't favored by all.

I wonder if this will force Amazon to "leak" more details about the upcoming Kindle Fire 2 (or whatever they plan on calling it)...

Did I mention that they are throwing in 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' to start your movie collection, free subscriptions to pre-chosen magazines (e-zine format of course), and a $25 credit to use in the Google Play Store?

google nexus 7 is the same price as a samsung galaxy 7 plus, but doesn't have an SD card slot, lacks a rear facing camera and no HDMI output.
nexus 7 does have a higher resolution screen and faster CPU/GPU.

it's about time 7" devices got a resolution upgrade. 1024x600 is not enough for a screen that size.
And samsung's S3 goes one further with 1280x800 on a 4.8" screen. Uses super AMOLED to top it off.

now, if only laptops, ultrabooks and ultra portables got the same treatment in the screen department.
I am so looking at MBP and MBA to replace my thinkpad. And all because the screen is just so terrible on my thinkpad.

No card slot is kind of a downer. HDMI I could not care less. No rear camera might be a deal breaker for some but meh, if you want great pictures you need a real camera anyway. I would love to see how fast it can play a facebook/zynga game like castleville (you will be surprised, is really resource-hungry).

PS: I do not play that game BTW. I just trouble shoot slow laptops that can't play it.

The lack of a SD isn't a huge concern for a lot of folks. Kindle Fire doesn't have SD, and it has been considered by many to be the best non Apple tablet on the market (at one point, anyway).

The lack of HD isn't a deal breaker, either. Though I wouldn't be surprised if in the future that laptops, ultrabooks, and the like aren't replaced by people carrying around a tablet that can be docked into a workstation at the office, schools, and internet cafes.

The lack of a rear facing camera might be a deal breaker for me. I can't justify the expense of a dedicated camera.

Does it has a USB port? If there's USB port then that makes up for lack of SD slot. I just like to have an easy way to load movies into the stuff. And by easy I mean, something that a non-techie wife or son/daughter could do. Because if it's me, I have an FTP server running on the android phone... but God forbid if I try to train to a cohabitant on how to use it.

Just double checked- it has Micro USB. Tech info linky.

Also looks like $199 gets you 8GB and it'll cost you $249 for 16GB.

Hum... Micro... to connect to a host I suspect, with the tablet being the device. I hope for a host port, with tablet being the host and a thumb drive being the device.

So which of those displays are best for outdoor/sunlit viewing? 3D and some HD is lost on me even under the best of lighting conditions...

I see the quad-core is the Tegra 3 from NVidia... linky

There are 3 version of the Tegra... the T30L (at 1.2Ghz with 667 Mhz DDR3), and the T30 (at 1.4Ghz with either 1066MHz LPDDR2 or 1500Mhz DDR3) will be the ones used by the nexus. A slightly faster version of the Tegra, the T33, will be used on the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity (wiki said).

I Imagine the 8gb nexus will probably come with the T30L and the 16gb nexus will have the T30. On the T30, I have no idea now this LPDDR2 compares against DDR3. I have out-techied myself.

Super AMOLED Plus, the one the S3 comes with, is the best one under sunlight.

Actually, if the panel says "Super" in it, that means it has super brightness and extra contrast to match, which makes it better than the plain version under sunlight.
The ipad (2012) panel can be pretty bright, but last I recall, it's not a super IPS panel.

Between the galaxy 7 plus and nexus 7, I don't think you'll see a huge difference.

One of the biggest hold backs for all of these SoC devices is the memory controller. That's why practically all of them are limited to 1GB. Faster memory helps with bandwidth, but they're all fairly slow. One particular problem is the number of channels that can be used without the chip bugging out.

I believe the "LP" stands for "low power", which means the performance remains the same, but they consume less power. Which obviously means the DDR3 would be faster.

Damn, I wish Google (and Apple, while we're at it) didn't have such a hardon for leaving out expandable storage. I'd buy a Samsung Galaxy Nexus (that Google is now selling directly, unlocked, unsubsidized, for $349) in a heartbeat to use as a Tiny Tiny Tablet if it weren't missing a microSD slot. The Asus Nexus 7 looks like a great piece of mid-priced, mid-sized tablet hardware, but again, no expandable storage ruins it.

Before anyone says it, **** dependence on the "cloud". Local storage is faster and doesn't vanish when you're away from a network. And an externally-accessible card slot is just plain handy.

yeah, I agree. This 1280x800 7" device should have been out LAST YEAR.

So far, there are only 2 other 7" tablets with 1280x800 resolution, and those have a similar cost to the ipad. At least they have a screen and specs to match. one is a toshiba AT3S0, the other is a samsung galaxy tab 7.7.

Now, if only samsung would make a super AMOLED plus panel with retina resolutions...

And of course it's quite possible Apple will respond with its own 7" tablet this Fall in that $200-$249 price range. Widely rumored.
