memories triggered by a smell

I just smelled baby poop. Don't know where it came from, no babies here at work. It triggered some memories of the kids.

Did one of your coworkers make a sudden dash to the restroom?

newborn baby poop has a distinct smell. Not unpleasant, almost sweet. Must be the breast milk.

There's some kind of floor wax or commercial cleaner with a distinctive smell. Every now & then I'll run into it. My father used to work at a research lab that had that smell. I thought it was the coolest place in the world with the smartest scientists ever. The smell takes me back to when Mom would load me up in the Edsel & meet him for lunch.

Grease & old oil = working on cars & motorcycles. Sea & Ski sunblock = summer at the beach. Stale beer & cigarette smoke = happy hours at dive bars.

I could go on.

Ah, that Patchouli oil or musk or whatever it is. I can't stand the smell, but in high school an super alternative hippy chick wore it all the time and she knew my name. No girls knew my name in high school except her, so obviously I was madly in love with her for no reason at all other than that. So when I smell it, I remember her sitting in front of me in class, turning around to help her cheat on stuff. But she knew my name!!

Early in the morning, Parris Island has a distinctive smell, it's a cross between rotting salt marsh and sewage. I've only experienced something close to that odor a couple of times in my life and *poof* I'm having boot camp flashbacks.

Rotting peach pits have a distinctive sweet-sour smell. They remind me of football, oddly enough. My high school football field is on the edge of town and about a mile beyond that is orchards. Football season starts just after the peach harvest.

The smell of a tomato plant... takes me back to being about 6 years old and exploring my great grandparents back yard in Round Lake, Illinois. This year I have about 20 tomato plants growing... so I can switch that memory on just about at will.

Smell of a freshly opened box of Crayolas takes me back to elementary school.

Smell of freshly cut grass takes me back to high school and making out with Jenny during the summer before my senior year.

Orange blossoms: my grandparents house where I lived in college. The place was right across the street from the Pacific (Shell Beach, CA 93449... right about here) and had a tiny backyard, but it was nearly all citrus trees. Orange, grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, and then there was also a nectarine or something in the far corner. Of course, the weather there made the trees produce year-round, so it always smelled like orange blossoms in the back yard.

And now that I've looked up the house in Google Maps, I have a sad. Trees are still there, though.

Was just going through old files and papers...came across a drawing I did in the summer of 1977, on the back of the August 1977 calendar page when I tore it off. I remember the day I did that drawing, I took my first shower with a new soap called "Coast" - the intense smell was so much more powerful than Ivory or Dial or whatever else my mom used to buy. I loved it.

As fate would have it we also just ran out of bath soap, so I ran out and bought some Coast. That was awesome.

My ex used to use a certain skin lotion that used to turn me on and make me horny. Now when I smell something similar, a pain in the pit of my stomach crops up.

That ***** nearly destroyed me.

Cycling home in the warm evenings, going past houses in residential areas... and smelling dinner cooking; certain dinner smells bring back youth, others my current life, man what a cornucopia of memories and emotions.
