Some don't interpret advances as well as others. Think finessing a girl instead of wrestling with a dog . If they don't see the hand or it comes too fast they don't like it. I have 2 cats and one will come and fall on your feet when you come in the door until you try to touch him. He likes contact but only when nobody is looking(Macho man). The other cat is a girl and she will hound out any available hand to pet or lap to lay on. She is unusual by experience, but a great many do like hugs and such as long as there aren't others present to be embarrassed with. At least they don't lick everything...

Cats are wild animals that have made their niche inside human habitations.

Cats are not small, funny looking dogs. They want attention on their own terms. It's best to let a cat come to you, not vice versa. Instead of reaching out to touch a cat, you can offer a hand, palm up. If a cat wants to be petted, it will usually rub up against your hand. If not so much, walk away. Also, when petting cats, a lot of people are TOO rough. Especially dog people. Don't ruffle fur against the grain, don't touch their ears, avoid feet and belly. Gently pet head and scratch under chin. Don't manhandle and never try to pick up a cat you don't know. Don't make sudden moves or loud noises. I think that's it LOL.

Some cats think that hands are a chew toy, especially if their owners play with them and let them attack their own hands. I don't let my cats bite me when they play.

Cat's aren't evil, they can be awfully cute when they want to be.

My wife got a cat that "followed her home" one time and in the midst of my drunken stupor at that time, I agreed to keeping it. That thing would spray my leg at random times, and try to tangle himself up in my feet as I was walking down the stairs. He also learned to say my dogs name (Miles) sounding like a screeching demon while saying it. I wasnt heartbroken when he got out of the house and was killed and have since stopped drinking as much so no more surprises.

Like my next door neighbor's dog (a Boxer) who jumped the fence and took three bites out of my wife.

Animal Control ended up euthanizing the dog, and rightly so, since we later found out the dog bit another person previously.

30 years and 8 cats later I finally realized that cats do not have good peripheral vision above their head. I can lean down to pet my youngest female and if she is not looking up, the sudden appearance of my hand so close to her face is threatening and she reacts to the threat. If I go "Psst, Psst" she'll look up and then doesn't feel threatened by may hand and will let me pet her.

Not knowing the specifics of the attack, I'm siding with the cat. I'm sure he had a good reason.

Mine like to bite my toes when I'm trying to get dressed. Other than that, they're little orange angels.

I was riding down a trail one day and stopped at a bench to take a break. I heard something in the bushes and the next thing I know a cat jumps out and hops up onto my lap and starts purring. So I stayed for a bit petting it while it laid in my lap then it jumps down and runs off...

This is my cat, Simba. He's my indoor cat:

This is a stray cat that's been hanging around my home for the past 3 years. I take care of her but she won't let me come near her.

And this is the other stray kitty that hangs around my place. I don't want him to get near me:

One time a neighbor broke her hip and was going to be in the hospital for a while. I got assigned to take her cat to a boarding facility.

The neighbor had one of those motorized hospital beds at home and the cat was ensconced far up in the innards. Food and treats wouldn't tempt it. So I finally had to attempt to get the cat itself. I gently reached under the bed.

It gave my hand a nasty bite, but I could tell the cat was very surprised when my reaction was not pulling my hand away, but using the fact that its teeth were sunk so far into my hand that grabbing it's head with my other hand was easy. I drew the cat gently out of its lair and put it in its crate.

Then I drove the cat to the boarding facility. They wouldn't take the cat without a certificate of vaccination, so I took the cat to its vet and made sure it was all up to date with its shots and back to the boarding facility, a process that took several hours.

After a month or so, the neighbor was back. When the cat would hear my voice if I came over to visit her, it would skedaddle. Poor kitty.

Maybe the cat was insulted by the OP's typing.
