Were you turned off by the name 'hotmail'?

I thought it was completely ridiculous, and no way I wanted something like that hooked up to my name. They lost a customer and I've wondered if there were many other people didn't like the name.

But outlook.com has opened up lately and you can still get a decent username at it. It is supposed to be an improved version of hotmail. That name sounds good to me.

I registered an account, haven't used it yet, but expect to soon. Not sure how it will stack up to gmail, but worth a try.

+1

It was free email. I like the name hotmail.com better than MSN.com.

Not a fan of the name...I use Gmail for work, and I hate it so much I refuse to log into it on my computer, only my phone. My new work account is @live.ca which is better. I don't care about hotmail for personal use.

Freeky! I was signed in to my hotmail acct, went to outlook.com and bam, my hotmail inbox but with a whole new look.

I remember hotmail striking me as odd back in the day, like should I use that on my resume or does it sound like an email service for pr0n fans?

I really should get an @nltaekwondo.ca or similar email but it won't work on my phone and I can't be bothered.

You can always have it auto-forward to whatever email you get on your phone.

I think OP is talking about the name 'hotmail' not the service... because it says 'hot'? By that line, I guess hotdogs should be avoided too....can let people see me putting a hotdog in your mouth.

Hotmail was the my very first web mail experience. I've had two different ones over the years, the latest one since like 94. I've also got yahoo (rarely use because I can't stand the interface) and gmail accounts. I just deactivated my hotmail because I got tired of it being exploited and sending out stuff on it's own.

I also signed up for a live.com account using the same sequence of characters before the @ as my gmail. Just started using the Outlook preview option- when they get the Skype functionality tied in, it will give Gmail a run for the money.

Of note to all of you Hotmail users- you might want to give Outlook a try now. MS will force all Hotmail accounts over to Outlook by the end of the year. However, my understanding is if you wait until then, and someone else registers for an Outlook account using the same name as your Hotmail, they get squatters rights and you'll be stuck selecting a new addy.

Well I just sent an email and it is slick. I imported my contacts from gmail, and when I started typing in the name it had the auto suggestions that were as good as gmail's.

It's simple with a minimalist type of interface. Like it so far.

I've been running into problems with a lot of google services. Even the search didn't work as well as Bing's for one query I had. Gmail has been balky too at times, although I can't really complain about it.

@hotmail.com and @aol.com have the same stigma in my mind.

I mainly use hotmail for newsletters and stuff like that. I can easily change those if MSN thinks we all need to use outlook, I can't stand that and wont use it.

Outlook or Outlook.com?

hotmail being free always put it in a different realm in my mind. I remember in the late 90s AOL addy meant "noob alert". Nowadays if someone emails me from and AOL account, I think "Woah! Old School!"

I got my yahoo address in 1996, and hotmail in 1997, IIRC. I briefly had an AOL in 99 or so, but only for a couple of months, installed one of them fancy new AOL CDs (big tech leap from the olde AOL floppies) I got at the grocery store to tide us over between ISPs.
