I feel awful

I just took a call from our HR folks to immediately disable a user's computer account.

I hate doing that. Means in the next few minutes HR will be walking to her desk and grab her.

This is on top of a busy day. I feel awful

That's pretty much it. You can't log in and then your boss or security shows up.

That's not unique.
I had a guy come down 7 flights to ask me why his login wasn't working. I wasn't aware of why since I was a programmer working on the POS, not network admin.....anyway, 2 hours later he comes by to tell me he was canned and to leave his contact info.

That's when you cut off their access instead, shut down their phone system and show them who's really in charge.

I just change all the passwords to all databases.....and then charge a fee for the new password.

There was some admin for the city of SF who pretty much took over the city's network and then got canned. He ended up in jail until the judge made him give them access.

I had 'security' come to my cubicle one day, well one last day. I told them 'you'll never take me alive' and ran into the break room to get my lunch. you know, management really needs to work on their sense of humor.

What if they have personal stuff on their computers? They just lose access to it? Do they ever come back to burn it all down because you stole their swingline stapler and moved them to the basement where the couldn't watch the two squirrels that were married?

Yes, I get all the information I know about working in a corporate office setting from Office Space.

When I was in a corporate setting, yep, you just lost access to it. That's what you get for keeping personal stuff on a company-owned machine. Tsk, Tsk, now out the door with you, you former employee.

Here at the university, just ask us nicely at the end of your two weeks, and we'll put your stuff on a flash drive or DVD if you didn't do it already yourself.

Personal stuff? Your company owns the hardware and they don't have the obligation to get anything back. What if they let get back into the system and you plant a virus.

For personal stuff, stick them in an USB drive or online...

It happened to me like that once. There was a rumored layoff and I came in that morning and couldn't log into my account. I went to my boss and asked whether I was being laid off. He replied, "I can't talk you you about that yet." So I called a couple headhunters, arranged an interview for the following Tuesday that became my next job the Monday after that, packed up my things, took them out to the car, said my good-byes and finally got called into a meeting at 10:00 where I was laid off. Everyone in our group was laid off, actually, except for one guy who was part time in our group (he went back to his other group full-time), and the manager, who was busted down a level or two.

Don't feel bad, Mike. They will find out one way or the other. If they are astute enough to know it's a possibility and figure out what their lack of access means, they can do something with the time before they get let go (like I did).

Did you remotely wipe her company phone or laptop?? Seriously, if you feel awful about doing your job, maybe you need to re-evaluate your priorities.

Don't feel bad until you find it easier to disable multiple user's accounts by simply writing a script that reads a "users.txt" file, and then just disables all user accounts listed in the file. I once was asked to disable over 450 user account as quickly as possible, and they expected it to take a couple hours, but I finished in under four minutes. Three weeks later I was asked to re-enable them all again, and again it took about four minutes.

Its kind of cool to be able to wield that kind of power in a network environment, until you step out of your cubicle and see the long lines of people exiting the building.....

For one of the several layoffs I survived at Sun, the manager scheduled us each for 10-minute (maybe only 5-minute) meeting slots back-to-back in a conference room in another building on Layoff Day. So each of us did a walk of shame into the next building where she told us one-by-one if we were staying or going, then we returned to our offices to either work or pack, depending. I showed up to the meeting with my backpack-- just in case. One silly individual was told he was getting laid off and then stuck around for the survivors-only staff meeting later in the morning... just in case we needed anything from him. Hah, yeah, the company is done with you, get out of here.

Its foolish to have personal stuff on the office computer. Use a data stick.

It's odd that they would let someone go on a Monday. Maybe she was let go last Friday.

can anyone tell me why 'they' do exit interviews? I was asked twice and both times told them that I don't work here anymore. I don't get it, do they want to see you cry or something?

Seems to me Sun did most of theirs on Tuesdays.

Not sure, but I hope someone heard about my exit interview at Sun.

Monday is an odd day, but, that's what it was. The lady from HR told me to e-mail the helpdesk in case she calls any of us so we don't reactivate her account. HR would be by there in fifteen minutes.

That's the way they do it around here. We had seven layoffs on one day a few months ago, and HR had us disable them in the middle of a staff meeting they were in.

Personal stuff? Unless you were some big shot attorney, it is gone the moment we take back your computer. We never inspect what's on them, never take backups, and just write our image over them. Your network folders are deleted once we receive an official termination notice from HR.

Used your e-mail address to communicate with your daughter's school? Tough s**t. Your mailbox disappears when we delete your network folders. In fact, we may reuse that e-mail address for another person with the same first initial and same last name.

However, this should not come as a surprise. It is in the IT usage and guidelines that everyone is supposed to read and sign with their new-hire paperwork.

I still feel awful disabling people's accounts. It makes me feel like I'm flipping the switch that cuts off their paycheck
