    Still smoldering

I saw this on the morning's TV news before driving out to the start of today's ride:
    http://www.columbian.com/news/2012/s...cial-building/
It caused me to change my route, since I would have driven right past it.

It was still smoldering when I returned, 8 hours later. Wowsers.

The news story link wouldn't work for me, so I found it in the Oregonian. Here it is.

so what burnt to a crisp?
Food for thought: if you aren't dead by 2050, you and your entire family will be within a few years from starvation. Now that is a cruel gift to leave for your offspring. ;)

Wasn't it closed and the land slated for redevelopment? How convenient that it burned, eh?

I talked to a couple of homeless beach campers and they said there was an explosion. I was amazed they pumped water on it all day long.

Arson hasn't been ruled out. Maybe they get more money this way than if CRC project (new bridge) forces sale?

The old Thunderbird/Red Lion Inn, right next to the I-5 bridge between Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington. As Les pointed out, it's in the way of the replacement I-5 bridge (half of the existing one is nearly 100 years old), so there's probably no way they would be able to redevelop the space anyway. It's been closed for 7 years.

Thanks to Ahsposo, I've had this running through my head all day:

Would they get any money if the CRC forced the sale? Isn't there eminent domain that limits the amount they can get? Seems like something similar happened with other transportation projects like the Max.

Hi Ramona! I thought there were lower limits set on what the gov't could buy your property for, dunno about upper limits. Not well versed in all of that business, though.

Day 3 now and it's still smoking! I-5 southbound traffic has been kinda slow all day long cuzza the lookie-loos. I rode across today and really got smoked out while riding by.

This does make me wonder if they turn off the sprinkler system in closed buildings.

Is that the place that was at one time a Double Tree Inn... and had a building on either side of the 5 bridge?

I used to go there every year for a Mentor Graphics conference... years and years ago. I often thought that was the only business that this hotel had. I just looked in Google maps and that area has changed quite a bit since then.

There's hotels on both sides of the I-5 bridge on the Oregon side of the Columbia. I think DoubleTree operated them for a while before Red Lion bought them all a few years back.

On Saturday (before the fire) I rode past the Red Lion at the Quay, on the Vancouver side. I'm used to being the spectacle, but I was upstaged by the local anime convention:
