Volunteer work...

When was the last time you volunteered time to a cause? What did you do to help your fellow man and or woman?

I volunteer on a bicycle repair ministry at our church, as well as the facilities maintenance team, I am the CubMaster of the CubScout pack at our youngest son's elementary school, where I also volunteer as part of the PTA Dad's den and I am an assistant coach for our oldest son's tackle football team.

I don't volunteer at the moment but I help people everyday at work, and I usually donate money at the various registers for the various charities. I would like to volunteer my time somewhere though.

I've got 100 hours of court ordered community service i'm working off. I'm starting off with the county forest preserve tomorrow, and plan on doing some work for various pet shelters and the local library. Last time I did any was probably 8 years ago when it was a requirement for history class in high school. I chose a daycare for children on respirators. It was sad but very rewarding. I tried volunteering at a pet shelter a couple years back, but the orientation was so depressing I just couldn't push my self to go back.

I spent a week with Habitat in St Bernard Parish after Katrina. I spent last summer's vacation helping to clean up record flooding (Lee) in an adjacent community. I have also run an outreach volunteer computer repair gig for my church. Last month, my church asked me to help out with some storm damage (downed trees).

My son helped out with the first two, and now my church is quick to contact him as well. Last week, we was asked to help move a single mom with her four kids. It was rather traumatic and I think some substance abuse problems with the mother may have been revealed.

A pastor asked me what motivates me to help. While I related John:13, there was a more touching story I related as well. It involves a close and generous friend (a former Scoutmaster) who's volunteerism in the past was repaid by young scouts when he need help with flood cleanup.

This morning... have been a volunteer with our non profit bike co-op for longer than I can remember.

Today I was tuning up our custom made shop tandem so it can go back out on rentals and our shop has donated a lot of time and materials to make it such a sweet ride.
