Computer geeks - need best guess..

My laptop has been going "white screen" lately. Kinda like a star trek teleporter, the images concentrate to the middle then just vanish upwards. Soft booting does nothing, just a hard reboot works to restore it. Graphic card or bigger issues? Yes, I am backing everything up while I can...

It could be heat related. What kind of laptop do you have, and how old is it?

Try pouring coffee on the keyboard. Could have a caffeine deficiency.

Does it mostly happen when you are doing something in particular, i.e. running 3D games or watching a movie? Does it mostly happen when it's been on for a certain amount of time?

If it's heat related you could try a laptop cooler to see if it helps and, and run a CPU temp monitor to see if it's getting hot.

You could also try installing the newest version of the AMD laptop video drivers just in case it's software related, but to me it sounds more like a hardware problem.

It mostly happens within a minute or so of starting it up. It has done it online and using Word.

I will update The video drivers and see if it helps. I am starting to think it is a hardware issue as well.

Thanks!

If it is a hardware issue, just buy a new one.

I hated the 64. Just bought a Macbook Air a couple of weeks ago as my travel laptop. The HP is my daily use laptop.

That's surprising.

For travel I've always carried a beater and saved the good PC for home. If it gets lost/dropped/stolen, less heartbreak.

Ditto.

I like HP's, have had good luck with them. The laptop I'm typing on is 4+ yrs old. Feeling the need for something new and this caught my eye. The Staples flyer in the paper today has this at $329.

Seems like HP is made more to sell than to use. Forget fixing it, they have dismal product support.
