I killed a squirrel today.

I was on my way to work early this morning for an all-day conference, cruising a shady street a whole block and a half from work, with the low autumn sun not all the way past the trees yet at 7:30.

The little bugger leapt off of the curb right in front of me. I know better than to dodge squirrels as that's a surefire way for the human to lose. But instead of the squirrel running away as usually happens, there was a *thumpthump* as my 700x32 Nashbar Gridlock tires got him right in the middle. I looked back and there he was in the middle of the bike lane, tail still twitching. I went a little further, but my curiosity got the better of me, so I turned around and rode back to him. Somehow, he had made it a step or two out of the bike lane and into the road. But he was really dead now.
Oh well, no shortage of squirrels on campus!

Time of death: 18 Oct 2012, approximately 07:40
Location: right about here

When I passed that way again on the way home a little after 17:30, he was gone, so I guess Grounds cleaned him up... or a starving student cooked and ate him.

I'd prefer to think that he was a free lunch for some poor grad student.

A wise man once told me, "Give a man a squirrel, and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to kill squirrels, and he'll eat for a liftetime." Or something like that.

I have had a couple of close calls but, no hit or kills. Just two days ago while riding our favorite rail trail I just missed a chipmunk. I never even saw him, my wife was a feet behind me and off to my left. All of a sudden I hear her gasp and she tells me this chipmunk just ran between my front and rear wheels as we were cruising along about 14 mph. It's probably just a matter of time and I would feel horrible if I actually got something but, if my wife would see it or heaven forbid have it happen to her she would probably never ride again.

I hit one while driving a couple weeks ago.

My wife and I were driving along, and saw the squirrel dart out into the street. It avoided the car ahead of us in the lane to our left, then tried to run across our lane. I figured it would see us and turn back. Two thumps under the car told me it didn't. My wife said, "awwww," and I looked in the mirror, only to see it finish crossing the street. Since I didn't actually see it dead, I'm going to assume that it's still alive, and is telling his buddies about the time he nearly got killed by the monster.

See.. this is why everyone should use 36H in 3cross lacing. Makes it much more difficult for them to dive through your wheel.

I ran one over with my car on Monday. I just couldn't wake up enough in time to ride to work and took the car instead that day, and the squirrel must have had a hard time waking up too as he was trying to decide which way to go as he crossed the road. I'm going to remember seeing the tail twitching in the rear view mirror next time I need to get going sooner and ride.
