DVD-R help

I've got a Panasonic DVD Recorder. Produces DVD-R format.
I've recorded the entire Tour de France and while I can play it
on the machine that recorded it I can't play it on other machines.
I mentioned to someone that I thought I could reproduce it
on my PC (new H/P) but when I load it it is
not recognized, keeps saying empty disk (or summat like that).

So, any of you techno-weenies (and thats a good thing)
have a suggestion as to how I can read/copy them?

thanks,
Marty

Since I've turned many DVD+R's into fine coasters, I am not sure if I would call myself an expert or anything

Can you please tell us what software you're using and what brand media you're burning onto? I'm not that experienced, but might be able to do some digging. In my case, the combination of Memorex DVD+R's and Nero Burning Rom caused the discs to read empty, even on the machine I produced them on! I did everything the same and used TDK DVD+R's and Roxio Easy Media Center and I backup all my dvds with no problem.

http://www.videohelp.com/forum/ is a good resource for ripping, burning, etc. Some good tutorials and helpful members there. Might also want to try http://www.afterdawn.com for some more guides and tips.

Good luck. At least the price of DVDRs is cheap enough so losing a few isn't too bad.

I have a Panasonic DVD recorder that records in DVD-RAM format. I think all of Panasonic's do. DVD-RAM is a comletely different animal than DVD-R. That would explain why other players and your PC won't read them. You could copy them by using the video/audio out on your Panasonic and connecting to the video/audi in on a PC or another recorder.

SS,
yah, I have DVD-ram and DVD-R format. I specifically used the dvd-r format
so I could read them on other machines.
I've been immersed in the sites that Mirona linked to.
I am so over my head (why couldn;t this be about bikes, or Mainframe computers
which I know about?).

A couple of questions to get a history...

Is the Panasonic DVD recorder a set-top box in your living room or a drive you put in your computer?

What format did you record the TdF in? MPEG-2 I would assume.

Your computer won't even recognize the DVD when you put it in? When you put it in the drive in your computer, can you browse the DVD, open it and view the files on the disc?

60 hours on how many DVDs?

Do you still have the video files you used to burn to DVDs?

Well, if you need any more blank media, I've got a nice new stack of Sony DVD+R discs that I bought, forgetting that my Mac won't even recognize them...
