Music geek help

My son revealed to me yesterday that he's writing a song, a rap about a local hobo. He's a rap fan and has a good buddy that's an accomplished musician, but my boy has no musical performance experience beyond what he's learned in choir so far.

I'd like to encourage him in his pursuit, so for Christmas I'd like to get him some sort of music gear, preferably something he can create with on the computer so he can record it. I am completely unfamiliar with what gear he would need, although I've seen some MIDI devices that looked like fun. My max budget is $2-300. Rather than a toy, I would prefer to get him something basic to start with, then add to it later. I hate buying junk that breaks.

Any suggestions?

Apparently not. Just took a look at that site myself. Clicked on the FAQ link and the subject of platform comes up. Largely in the Apple ecosystem, but works on Windows desktop and Android coming soon.

Didn't do too much looking around there, but it looks like it's more of a sound mixer/music editing software suite that you download individualized tracks on a per instrument basis.

Or you can turn those iProduct storage bins of yours and turn them upside down. Rap is mainly about the percussion anyway

I'm not a rap fan...but my folks didn't like my music either. I think that may be the point. He's actually into all the dead rappers like Tupac, etc.

I'm thinking of something like this or this.

That second one looks like he could get into mobile DJing if the budding writer/producer thing fizzles.

The Kennedy's always encouraged thier son's, but don't let rappers become the main influence. You're the one who knows your boy the best and if he's going that way, be close to him if he needs you.

i'd let your son sort out the choices himself. if my parents had bought my first guitar, it would've had nylon strings on it. nothin wrong with that now, but as a teen, i would've returned it for a korean electric ($300).

go to guitar center with your son and get some decent advice. if he's into vinyl (which has made a huge comeback among the dj community), might as well buy a turntable where he can scratch and mix.

this is not the thread, but i recently watched a few youtube vids on the fake les pauls coming from china. people are buying these at $300, investing $600 in them, and getting a near-les paul for a third of the gibson $3k asking price.

He likes the links I posted earlier. He could have fun tweaking music he already likes and with some software, even create something new.

As for the rap, yeah, I'm not really a fan, but I have a great relationship with my son. We communicate well and I haven't seen any signs that it is effecting him negatively. I only need look at how my own genre choices have influenced my own life to see that he's just fine.

Let me tell a little story about my son.

He joined choir because that's where the girls are. While I don't think he's a playah, he wants to meet girls and I encourage it. At a recent choir get together in Durango at Fort Lewis college he met up with Chloe, a beautiful girl from Cortez. How do I know Chloe? Well, when my son moved back in with me he mentioned a girl that he'd stayed in contact with since his Mom moved to Cortez when he was in the third grade. That weekend we met up with her to his entire delight, and Chloe was wonderful. A very pretty girl from a poor family, ambitious, a cheerleader, yet entirely down to Earth. When they met up in Durango at the choir conference, he sat at her table which was then surrounded by all her cheerleader friends wanting to know what was so special about this guy from Pagosa. When all the girls from Pagosa saw all the pretty girls from Cortez flocking around my son, they all wondered what was so special about him.

All I can say is that I want my son's High School experience to be better than mine was. He's getting over being shy, taking risks and expanding his confidence by singing in the choir, and is considering taking drama next year. Learning how to DJ and produce his own music can only add to his self confidence and popularity.

According to my son, yes. So many seem to accommodate him too. Funny, that.

You are a perfect dad!

When I was in high school, I was the super nerdy kid who sat with one other super nerdy kid at lunch. The "head cheerleader" and all her friends sat with us one day. I thought they were doing it just to set us up to tease us later. It was a one time deal. Later, I found out that she had the total hots for me, but was too shy to do anything about it herself, and her act of sitting with us with her friends was the real deal--no motives to tease us or hurt us later. She seemed like a ditz at the time, but she now has her PhD and is on TV as a correspondent a lot. I was never into her, though, so I didn't miss out on anything, but it makes me really happy for your son to be in the position he is in.

I can't help with the original question, though, since this isn't my area of musical knowledge at all, but on a personal level I hope he does what he wants to keep doing and can be provided the tools for what he needs without taking it for granted. Great for him!

Perfect? Not hardly, but I am grateful to be in touch with my son's needs.
