Are you afraid of dying?

After someone I know got hit in the head with a piece of wood with a nail in it (the wood slipped off of a pallet while he was removing it from up high) we discussed how the possibility of him getting sick from the rusty nail (not sure if the nail was what cut him) and the topic of dying from it came up.

He said that his biggest fear was of dying.

I told him I wasn't afraid of death.

He shook his head and repeated that it was something that he worries about all of the time.

I couldn't understand why he was and when questioned, he really didn't have an answer. So this got me to wondering what others felt.

Are you afraid of dying? Why or why not?

This is all we've got... any time spent worrying about when it's going to end, is time wasted.

I don't think he spends time thinking about it, he just got a little freaked that something could happen because of the nail and didn't want to die from it. He said whenever things like this happens, it concerns him and his fear is of dying. So are you afraid to die?

I have always believed that my time on this earth is finite. My faith tells me this. It also gives me hope and causes me not to fear death. What I do in the time I am given is important, but the length of time itself is not.

So, to answer your question, no I am not afraid of dying because I have trusted in Jesus Christ as my saviour.

Not going to take this to P&R, but feel free to PM me about what that means to me.

I guess it depends on your interpretation of "afraid". I am by no means an adrenaline junky... I don't take unnecessary risks like skydiving, base jumping, etc... but at the same time, I don't shelter myself to prevent the inevitable. I don't think about death or alter what I WANT to do because I might die.

There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime.

I'm not afraid of dying, I am afraid of going before my time and what that would do to my family.

No, I'm afraid of getting old. I've seen family members and friends whose bodies and minds wore out but they hung on.

Not afraid of being dead. It's the transition that seems nasty.

And my anticipated future after death is yet another rearrangement of my atoms, which the creator will continue to use for other things. Having been created in a star, smashed into planet earth, become rocks, amoebas, dinosaurs, trees and who knows what, their adventures will continue.

That's typical for any forum. If you ask something specific like "Who has tried the Brooks B-17 Imperial and how did it compare to the straight B-17?" and you'll get a bunch of guys who've tried neither telling you about other saddles they've tried and highly recommend, and eventually the discussion will evolve (or devolve) into one on recumbents.

I'm not afraid of death, but sometimes I wonder what event is going to cause it, that's the thing that bothers me a little. Will I die peacefully in my sleep? Or screaming in terror, like my passengers? An old joke :-)

And leaving family behind bothers me.

But it will happen eventually to everyone, so you just make the best of life. That's why I have family, friends and bikes.

Puerto Ricans (and I'm sure other nationalities) have a saying that goes like this,"En el momento que uno nace, se empreca a murier." translation: "From the moment someone is born, they begin to die." So no Siu, I'm not afaid of dying, its just another part of life. When death come for me, I'll embrace it.

I disagree. I asked the exact same thing elsewhere and with two pages* so far, it's gotten good responses. And yes, I agree that things go off kilter, I've been a member here for a tad longer than you. But I'm not asking about comparisons. I'm asking for reasons.

*Edit: Three pages now...

And I agree. But as a point as well, with your line of work, you've seen a lot of what can lead to death. So exposure to what you experience tends to educate one more than those who do other lines of work.

Where I work I don't see a whole of of deaths (maybe once or twice a year) but when I was in the academy I witnessed quite a few. Granted I don't want to die in pain (who wants to?) I've seen what led to these deaths and most of them could have been prevented.

No.

"Far better it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides." -Carl Sagan

Death itself does not bother me. I was not aware of existence before I was born and I'll be in the same state after my death. I am bothered by painful death, or death before I'm ready so I take what precautions I can and live my life, knowing that if my number comes up, I've loved and been loved, I've dreamed, and I've experienced life. That's as much as any of us can hope for.
