Most of these appear to be covers... unlikely to make it very big...

HooDoo Gurus, "I Want You Back" -- Not really heavy metal, but I like your thought about giving some recognition to great songs or bands that for some reason didn't hit it big....there are so many.

I would call the HooDoo Gurus alternative or new wave since they were an 80"s era band out of Australia. Great Live

Is this heavy metal that didn't make it big outside heavy metal circles, or heavy metal that didn't make it big among those who listen to heavy metal?

It is a little known fact that Abba started out as a death metal band... "Abbath" never made it big until they softened things up and changed their name.

Conversely, Metallica never made it when they played smooth jazz.
