so what if you don't mail your taxes today?

what are they gonna do, mail you a letter and ask for a penalty? so what? how much could it be for 1 day late? there's probably a grace period anyway? or are they really ball busters?

I'm talking NY state
MASS state
& Federal

I know for MASS we get an extra day cuz of Patriots Day ...

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

I forgot to file one year, and I can't remember whether I owed them or them me but it was close. Anyways, I never heard from them and this was ages ago.

Why didn't you just mail an extension form? NYS lets you do it online for free. Federal, you can e-file an extension or mail IRS pub 4868 and you are automatically given a 6 month extension. Some states, if you don't owe taxes, your federal extension covers the state extension as well (Connecticut for sure). But one day late, I wouldn't worry about it.

If they owe you they don't care when you mail it. If you owe them there are penalties

Not quite....they can and usually will assess a late filing fee and if you owe anything, they will add interest.

If you're due to get a refund, you don't have to file by today. However, if you don't file within 3 years for that refund, you forefit it to the US Treasury.

One day or one month makes little difference. Any penalty is there.

Interest is a different matter and it of course keeps building.

Now days it is easy to file for an extension. It used to be you had to give a reason, not now.

Instant 10% penalty, plus interest. So if you owe them $5K, if you miss the filing postmark by 1 day, it's an automatic $500 fine.

If you are due a refund I don't think there is any penalty.

Don't go there. File, send the check, even if you have to borrow it from another source.

turns out, due to the bombing, MASS residents will get an extra day to file Federal.

you think NY state will be so generous?

actually it's all moot, my CPA is filing electronically and he dated his stuff 4/12 but I mailed my checks today, he won't get my letters and signatures 'till who knows when

I can't say for sure about the IRS. But once I was 1 day late mailing in my tax form with the state here in AZ. I did drop it in a mailbox early on the 15th along with the IRS form. I received a notice and fine from the state quicker than I would have gotten a refund. Never heard back from the IRS.

Always wondered how come 1 was OK but not the other. Asked the state to show me the envelope with the late postmark but was denied. They still wanted the fine too.

I messed up one year and forgot to provide documentation that I rolled over my 401K into another plan... 8 years later I got a bill from the IRS... Yipes that was fun to figure out! Never assume they won't figure it out.... they just aren't the most efficient agency...

PS: The state sent me a letter too... I eventually straightened it out with IRS, the state never responded and kept my return... oh well.

direct from my CPA: "They get all worked up about filing on time, but payments a day or two later are ok."
