How do the Amish deal with this problem?

Maybe letting the elders decide is the best way. But in Iceland, they use technology...

Iceland's eclectic naming convention makes using last names virtually useless in tracing ancestry. A database is good approach although there must be hard-bound records too.

Isn't Tennessee evidence enough that this isn't a real big problem?

As a gentleman who grew up Pennsylvania Dutch once told me, "EVERYONE'S related to an Esh", and indeed the only actively Amish family I've ever met were named Esh.

In a related story (ba-dum-pisshhh), my mom's family is from an insular community on the barrier islands off of Charleston, SC, and we're definitely all related. It was like Iceland distilled.

Incest, there's an app for that! New Apple tag line or what!

Are you suggesting that we should start interbreeding the Amish and the Icelanders?
