What CAN you cook? Neither fried chicken or fried rice are particularly difficult. Ingredients are cheap and mostly what's involved is finding a good recipe and perfecting your technique. Will you be able to duplicate Popeye's or Chef Wangs? Probably not but you'll get close enough that you won't have to rely on them for your fix.

It's fried cheese, (not battered,) that they set on fire at your table, yell "OPA!" and squeeze lemon all over it. It's awesome. Also Andy Capps Hot fries, I definitely can't cook those, yet.

And very likely, you'll make it more like you enjoy as you go on, till you won't miss them at all, and when you do try them you'll think they are much worse than your own recipe.

Fries - sweet potato or regular french fries. I don't have a deep fryer and baking fries just isn't the same.

I can't justify getting a deep fryer. I don't eat a lot of fried foods, but I do like French fries.

My favorite food I can't cook? Well, I can take solace in the fact that no one else can cook it, either.

I can't fry chicken worth a damn. Which is ironic since my I have my grandmother's recipe and her fried chicken was world famous (if the world is limited to Johnson's Corner).

Along the same lines, Onion Rings... my weakness... can't do 'em right without a deep fryer.

Other foods that I can't get just right include a whole bunch of Chinese foods... I can get close, but the flavor is different, and often the outer coating is not the same as that which I would order. Yes, there are still reasons to go out for food. I can make spring rolls that are close, but again not perfect.

Sushi... I couldn't roll the rice and get the seaweed wrapper just right without "years" of practice.... and I doubt my wife is going to wait that long for her Sushi fix.

It took me a long time to learn that if you're going to make them at home you have to twice fry them. Once at lower heat to cook them through, and then at higher heat to crisp them up.
