Daniel Day Lewis is pretty remarkable. I first saw in, My Left Foot, and did not know he did not have CP until I saw him on the Oscars.

Paul Newman played convincingly a wide variety of leading men for 40+ years. The only role he couldn't ever play even into his late 70's, was a man who was not handsome and charming.

Always thought that Paul Newman and Liz Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof were the Ultimate Dynamic Duo. Runnerups were:
Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward in The Long Hot Summer and Paul Newman and Patricia Neal in Hud.

Well there are some good ones out there too.
Denzel Washington, Samuel Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Mel Gibson, Christian Bale, George Clooney, Clint Eastwood are some of my favorites.

Either Keanu Reeves or Johnny Depp. Keanu says Whoa Dude much better than Depp, but Depp is much better at walking on uneven surfaces and making goofy faces.

Does it have to be a lead type of actor, or may character actors, those men and women you see frequently in movies, and on TV,
but never put a name to, be included?

If character actors may be included, my list for best will include:

-Johnathan Harris, of Lost in Space fame. "My back is a disaster area!"
-Richard Basehart
-Alex Rocco. If it's a mob movie, and he's in it, he's going to get killed pretty soon.
-Michael Ironside. If there is a better bad guy actor, let him come forward.
-The entire cast of Sons of Anarchy. Where did they find these guys?

Martin Landau. Guess he never made it big. But I thought he was good at portraying an actor playing many parts in Mission Impossible.

In a similar vein, Jeffrey Donovan in Burn Notice.

I can almost forgive Space:1999 because of this. Almost.

To me a great actor will disappear into his role; making you believe that what you are watching purely the character. For this reason, I dont like Paul Newman, Richard Burton and most stars.

What about the female actress ? None of them make the cut ?

I agree that to be a good actor, he has to be the character ... playing a bad guy that people love to hate him even when he is not acting. What about the bad guy in Die Hard - Alan Rickman and Mr Yippe-kai-ye Bruce Willis
